McDonough Museum announces five exhibitions to open spring semester

The McDonough Museum of Art has announced five exhibitions that will open their spring 2024 schedule beginning Friday, January 19 and running through Saturday, March 2. The museum will feature exhibits by artists Roberley Bell, Jonathon Brewer, Lauren Semivan, Posters Without Borders, and new Emerging Artist Morgan Bukovec.

University Theatre students attend Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland

Eight students from YSU University Theatre attended the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland in August 2023 as part of a new study-abroad course created by lecturer Adam Howard and co-led by associate professor Katherine Garlick. The Fringe is the largest arts and theatre festival in the world and is vital for the creation of all varieties of new theatre and performance.

“Scapin”

YSU University Theatre will present its production of “Scapin” in the YSU Ford Theater November 10 – 12 and 17 – 19, 2023. Directed by senior lecturer Todd Dicken, this comedy follows the adventures of the mischievous servant Scapin as he explores themes of deception, forgiveness, and the triumph of wit.

Youngstown CityScape awards TREK and Vallourec Star murals

Murals completed by YSU Department of Art students at local businesses TREK Coffee House and Vallourec Star were recently recognized during the 17th annual Beautification Awards ceremony November 9, 2023, presented by Youngstown CityScape. This non-profit presents the Beautification Awards to businesses, neighborhood groups, and individuals who take the time to clean up, reenergize, or care for an urban area in the city of Youngstown. Both TREK and Vallourec received Beautification Awards for businesses.

Department of Art students unveil TREK Coffee House mural

Students from the YSU Department of Art unveiled their latest mural for the city of Youngstown Monday, October 30, 2023 at TREK Coffee house, located at 1588 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, OH. The mural was created by students enrolled in the YSU Department of Art’s Mural and Site-Specific Painting course.

YSU Wind Ensemble awarded

YSU Wind Ensemble awarded 2nd place in 2023 American Prize National Nonprofit Competition

The YSU Wind Ensemble, led by associate professor of music and director of bands Michael Butler, was awarded 2nd place in the Band & Wind Ensemble Performance category as part of the 2023 American Prize National Nonprofit Competition. The American Prize holds one of the most comprehensive series of contests for the performing arts across the nation, awarding the best artists, directors, ensembles, and composers across all levels based on submitted recordings.

Dana School of Music student earns 1st place
award at NATS audition

Dana School of Music student Erica Walker was awarded 1st place in the Adult category at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) audition in Athens, Ohio October 21, 2023. The auditions, held every fall, offer students the opportunity to pursue individual performance goals and receive supportive critiques that encourage them to improve their vocal skills and artistry.

University Theatre to open 2023-24 season with “Zombie Prom”

YSU University Theatre will open its 60th anniversary season with the production of “Zombie Prom,” a cult classic musical that follows a teenage girl who falls in love with a rebel who becomes a zombie. Shows will be held October 6 – 8 and 13 – 15, 2023 in the YSU Ford Theater, located in Bliss Hall on YSU’s campus.

McDonough Museum of Art announces four exhibits to open fall season

The McDonough Museum of Art has announced four exhibits that will open their fall 2023 season beginning Tuesday, September 5 and running through Saturday, November 4. The exhibits will feature the works of Shona Macdonald, the #notwhite collective, Betsy Stirratt, and three artists from the Short Shorts Festival.

YSU printmaking students spend summer abroad in Scotland

Students from the YSU Department of Art printmaking program studied abroad July 1 – 31, 2023 at the Glasgow Print Studio in Glasgow, Scotland. Accompanied by professor of art Joseph D’Uva and associate professor of art Johnathan Farris, the students were immersed in weekly excursions and courses throughout the Scotland landscape.
