University Theatre student attends Open Jar Institute Summer Intensive

This summer, senior University Theatre student Jessica Hirsh attended the Open Jar Institute’s Summer Intensive Program held in New York City. The program, which lasts a week, consists of high intensity workshops in acting, singing, dance, and audition techniques.

University Theatre to conclude 60th anniversary season with “Once Upon a Mattress”

YSU’s University Theatre will conclude its 60th anniversary season with the production of “Once Upon a Mattress,” a whimsical, enchanting musical that follows a journey through the kingdom of happily ever after. Performances will be held April 5 – 7 and 12 – 14, 2024 in the YSU Ford Theater in Bliss Hall.

YSU’s University Theatre will kick off its spring season with a production of “It’s a Small World (or The Robot Play),” a play that will showcase a fusion of futuristic storytelling and social commentary. The show will be open to the public February 16 – 18 and 23 – 25, 2024.

Associate professor of theatre Katherine Garlick was awarded a 2020-21 Distinguished Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching by the YSU Academic Affairs Division April 7, 2021. Garlick teaches courses in costume construction, production design, stage makeup, and theatre history.

University Theatre to open 2023-24 season with “Zombie Prom”

YSU University Theatre will open its 60th anniversary season with the production of “Zombie Prom,” a cult classic musical that follows a teenage girl who falls in love with a rebel who becomes a zombie. Shows will be held October 6 – 8 and 13 – 15, 2023 in the YSU Ford Theater, located in Bliss Hall on YSU’s campus.

YSU University Theatre will present its production of “Scapin” in the YSU Ford Theater November 10 – 12 and 17 – 19, 2023. Directed by senior lecturer Todd Dicken, this comedy follows the adventures of the mischievous servant Scapin as he explores themes of deception, forgiveness, and the triumph of wit.

University Theatre students attend Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland

Eight students from YSU University Theatre attended the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland in August 2023 as part of a new study-abroad course created by lecturer Adam Howard and co-led by associate professor Katherine Garlick. The Fringe is the largest arts and theatre festival in the world and is vital for the creation of all varieties of new theatre and performance.

University Theatre to present production of “Antigone”

YSU University Theatre will conclude its 59th season with “Antigone,” opening for two weekends starting Friday, March 31, 2023 at 7:30 PM in the YSU Ford Theater, located in Bliss Hall on YSU’s campus. “Antigone,” written by Jean Anouilh, is an adaptation of Sophocles’ play of the same title.

YSU University Theatre returns to Spotlight Theater with “The Last Five Years,” opening Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 7:30 PM in Bliss Hall, located on YSU’s campus. Written by Jason Robert Brown, this Drama Desk award-winner has been translated into multiple languages and was named one of TIME Magazine’s ten best shows of 2001.

University Theatre presents production of “Godspell”

YSU’s University Theatre will continue its 2022-23 season with the production of “Godspell,” a musical based on the Gospel of Matthew from the New Testament of the Bible. The show is structured in parables and is interspersed with music set to the lyrics of traditional hymns. “Godspell” will run November 11 – 20, 2022 in the YSU Ford Theater, located in Bliss Hall on YSU’s campus.
