Associate professor of theatre Katherine Garlick was awarded a 2020-21 Distinguished Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching by the YSU Academic Affairs Division April 7, 2021. Garlick teaches courses in costume construction, production design, stage makeup, and theatre history.

University Theatre to present “An Evening with Billy Shakes”

YSU’s University Theatre will present its next production, “An Evening with Billy Shakes,” April 9 – 11 and 16 – 18, 2021. The virtual production, directed by associate professor of theatre Matthew Mazuroski, will feature scenes from a dozen of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays.

University Theatre prepares for spring calendar of events

William Shakespeare, the 1970s, original student work, and an evening of dance are among the highlights of the YSU University Theatre’s 2021 spring season, which opens March 25 and runs through April 24. Other productions will include a cabaret titled “Welcome Spring!” that showcases YSU’s Musical Theatre program, and the Festival of New Works, which will celebrate original student work in film, playwriting, choreography, puppetry, and devised performance.

University Theatre to present new show titled “Elegies: A Song Cycle”

YSU’s University Theatre will present “Elegies: A Song Cycle,” the program’s second virtual show of the semester, November 13 – 15 and 20 – 22, 2020. Created by William Finn, “Elegies” originally premiered following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and deals with the emotional aftermath of that event and the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s.

YSU’s University Theatre is kicking off its 2020-21 season with a virtual production of Tennessee Williams’ classic play, “The Glass Menagerie,” September 25 – 27 and October 2 – 4. The show will follow a family of three as they struggle to keep up with the changing world around them.

YSU’s University Theatre will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a cabaret titled “A Kiss to Build a Dream On” Friday, February 14, 2020 at the B&O Station Banquet Center in Youngstown. The event will feature nearly 30 students in performances of repertoire from Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Bruno Mars, Tony Bennett, Etta James, and the Dixie Chicks, among others.

YSU’s University Theatre is set to present its production of “Cabaret,” the Tony- and Oscar-winning musical, to the public November 15 – 17 and 22 – 24, 2019 in the YSU Ford Theater, located in Bliss Hall. The production will explore the dark and tumultuous times of pre-World War II Germany.

“Romeo and Juliet” and “Cabaret” highlight 2019-20 University Theatre season

The 2019-20 YSU University Theatre season, highlighted by productions of “Romeo and Juliet” and “Cabaret,” will open Friday, September 27, 2019 with “Speech & Debate.” The season will also include the annual YSU Dance Ensemble Concert, fall and spring cabaret performances, and two free productions created by YSU students.
