University Theatre prepares for spring calendar of events
February 7, 2021
William Shakespeare, the 1970s, original student work, and an evening of dance are among the highlights of the YSU University Theatre’s 2021 spring season, which opens March 25 and runs through April 24.
The spring season will open with a virtual presentation of “Now You See Us . . . An Evening of Virtual Dance.” Directed by Amy A. Wright and featuring choreography by YSU’s dance program faculty, the show will be open to audiences Thursday, March 25, through Saturday, March 27. Performances will begin at 7:30 PM each day, with an additional performance at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
The season will continue with a virtual presentation of “An Evening with Billy Shakes,” which will be open for viewing April 9 – 11 and 16 – 18. Directed by associate professor of theatre Matthew Mazuroski, the play will showcase selections from the work of William Shakespeare, spanning from comedy skits to tragic scenes. Each day will feature shows at 7:30 PM, with additional shows being held at 2:00 PM April 10, 11, 17, and 18.
Both “Now You See Us . . . ” and “An Evening with Billy Shakes” will be available to watch here at the posted times. Tickets can be purchased using the same website; costs are $10 for a single viewer, $25 for group viewing or a watch party, and free for YSU students, faculty, and staff with a valid ID.
Friday, April 23, the “Welcome Spring!” cabaret will premiere on the Cliffe College YouTube channel. Showcasing students in YSU’s Musical Theatre program, the performance will focus on the 1970s and the out-of-sight music that sparked love, peace, hope, and renewal during the decade. The show, organized by Maria Fenty Denison, will begin at 7:30 PM.
Closing the 2020-21 University Theatre season is the Festival of New Work Saturday, April 24, at 7:30 PM. Coordinated by Mazuroski, the event celebrates original student work in the areas of film, playwriting, choreography, puppetry, and devised performance. The free production will premiere on the Cliffe College YouTube channel.
To support the faculty, staff, and students of University Theatre, donations can be made to the Giving Program, which supports the program as they continue producing innovative, creative, and evocative theatre for the entire community.
