Department of Art to host Portfolio Review Day for aspiring art students

YSU’s Department of Art will host Portfolio Review Day, a chance for high school students, transfer students, and aspiring artists to showcase their portfolios to the department’s faculty, Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM in YSU’s Bliss Hall. In addition to receiving feedback on their work, participants can learn about the Department of Art’s programs, facilities, and scholarship opportunities.

Guest artist Julia Betts to present for Department of Art Lecture Series

The 2024-25 Department of Art Lecture Series will welcome guest artist Julia Betts for its next installment Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 5:30 PM in the McDonough Museum of Art lecture hall (room 3000). Focusing on the intersection of sculpture, performance, and installation, Betts aims for her work to create an effect based on certain assumptions. Her current exhibit, “The Dams are Broken,” will also be on display as part of the McDonough’s “Winter Art Exhibition” through Friday, February 28, at the museum.

Department of Art to celebrate Black History Month with exhibit by Crystal Miller

YSU’s Department of Art will celebrate Black History Month as it welcomes interdisciplinary mixed-media artist Crystal Miller to present her “Black History Month Exhibition.” Miller’s exhibit, which will explore Afro-futurism using unconventional materials such as beads, glitter, and rhinestones, will be on display beginning Monday, February 3, through Friday, February 28, 2025, in YSU’s Judith Rae Solomon Gallery.

Department of Art to host “Northeast Ohio Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition”

YSU’s Department of Art will host the “Northeast Ohio Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition” in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery beginning Wednesday, January 8, through Saturday, January 25, 2025. This exhibit stands as northeast Ohio’s division of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, a national competition in which 7th to 12th grade students can submit their original or literary pieces for award consideration.

Judith Rae Solomon Gallery to host “Junior Portfolio Review Exhibition”

YSU’s Department of Art will conclude its fall semester of events with a student-led “Junior Portfolio Review Exhibition” in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, located in YSU’s Bliss Hall, beginning Monday, December 2, 2024, through Friday, December 13. This event provides junior-level art students with an opportunity to garner feedback on their work.

Graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts students from YSU’s Department of Art will display their work in an exhibit titled “Fall 2024 Graduating B.F.A. Exhibition” at the McDonough Museum of Art beginning Saturday, November 23, through Saturday, December 14. Having worked closely with their faculty members across a broad range of art practices, this exhibit provides the soon-to-be graduates with an opportunity to share their original and innovative discoveries with the public.

Department of Art to present Freshman Portfolio Review Showcase in Bliss Hall

YSU’s Department of Art will present its Freshman Portfolio Review Showcase to the public Monday, November 18, 2024, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM on the fourth floor of YSU’s Bliss Hall. A requirement for all freshmen art students is to complete a Freshman Seminar and Portfolio Review course, which culminates with this public showcase that gives the students a chance to receive feedback from the public and their peers on their work.

Guest artist Erin Mallea to join Department of Art Lecture Series

The 2024-25 Department of Art Lecture Series will continue this semester as it welcomes guest artist Erin Mallea for a studio visit and lecture Monday, November 18, in the McDonough Museum of Art. Mallea is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the past and present of microcosms as entry points into larger human and environmental conditions.

Red Press Collaborative to welcome Michael Weigman as guest artist

YSU’s Department of Art will present a new installment of its Red Press Collaborative program, featuring guest artist Michael Weigman, Monday, November 4, through Friday, November 8, in room 4025 of Bliss Hall. Weigman will work alongside Department of Art students for the week to create a limited-edition print that will be made available for ownership via a donation of $125.

Department of Art Paint Studio to exhibit class project in Solomon Gallery

The YSU Department of Art’s Paint Studio will exhibit its class project, titled “Multiples,” in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery beginning Wednesday, October 30, through Friday, November 29. The exhibit will be comprised of exciting, small-scale art created in multiples that expand both the formal and conceptual dimensions of the students’ work.
