Department of Art to present Freshman Portfolio Review Showcase in Bliss Hall

YSU’s Department of Art will present its Freshman Portfolio Review Showcase to the public Monday, November 18, 2024, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM on the fourth floor of YSU’s Bliss Hall. A requirement for all freshmen art students is to complete a Freshman Seminar and Portfolio Review course, which culminates with this public showcase that gives the students a chance to receive feedback from the public and their peers on their work.

Guest artist Erin Mallea to join Department of Art Lecture Series

The 2024-25 Department of Art Lecture Series will continue this semester as it welcomes guest artist Erin Mallea for a studio visit and lecture Monday, November 18, in the McDonough Museum of Art. Mallea is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the past and present of microcosms as entry points into larger human and environmental conditions.

Red Press Collaborative to welcome Michael Weigman as guest artist

YSU’s Department of Art will present a new installment of its Red Press Collaborative program, featuring guest artist Michael Weigman, Monday, November 4, through Friday, November 8, in room 4025 of Bliss Hall. Weigman will work alongside Department of Art students for the week to create a limited-edition print that will be made available for ownership via a donation of $125.

Department of Art Paint Studio to exhibit class project in Solomon Gallery

The YSU Department of Art’s Paint Studio will exhibit its class project, titled “Multiples,” in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery beginning Wednesday, October 30, through Friday, November 29. The exhibit will be comprised of exciting, small-scale art created in multiples that expand both the formal and conceptual dimensions of the students’ work.

The Department of Art Lecture Series will welcome guest artist Katie Butler as the first lecturer of its 2024-25 season Thursday, October 24, in the McDonough Museum of Art. From Southwestern Ontario, Butler’s work is rooted in expressive, personal scenes that invite audiences to explore the range of emotions that can be found in her pieces.

Guest artist Michael Loderstedt to exhibit in Solomon Gallery

The Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, located in YSU’s Bliss Hall, will welcome guest artist Michael Loderstedt to campus as he presents his work in an exhibition titled “Island of Little Truths” beginning Wednesday, September 25, 2024, through Wednesday, October 23. Loderstedt has been creating original prints, photographs, installations, and books for over 30 years.

The Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, located in YSU’s Bliss Hall, will welcome guest artist Katie Davis to YSU as she exhibits her work, titled “Domestic Instinct,” in the gallery beginning Monday, August 26, through Friday, September 20. Davis’s exhibit explores the creative power that can be found in domestic spaces and the everyday materials of human lives.

McDonough Museum named as recipient of Ohio Arts Council Sustainability Grant

The McDonough Museum of Art and the Cliffe College of Creative Arts have been named as recipients of a Sustainability Grant in the amount of $12,200 from the Ohio Arts Council (OAC) Board. The funding, part of over $22 million in arts grants approved by the OAC for fiscal year 2025, will be used to support McDonough and Cliffe College programs, including the Emerging Artist Series.

Art professor attends Lilly Conference for Teaching and Learning in Texas

Professor of art Dragana Crnjak, alongside eight other YSU faculty members, attended the Lilly Conference for Evidence-Based Teaching and Learning in Austin, Texas May 20 – 22, 2024. The Lilly Conference provides a forum for educators to share and model their scholarly approaches to teaching and learning that report quality learning outcomes and promote professional development of faculty.

“Junior Portfolio Review” to open in Solomon Gallery

The Department of Art’s “Junior Portfolio Review” exhibit will be open to the public beginning Monday, April 22, 2024 through Friday, April 26 in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, located in Bliss Hall. All junior-level Department of Art students will present their bodies of work for review by a studio faculty committee in this exhibit.
