The YSU Wind Ensemble, led by associate professor of music and director of bands Michael Butler, was recently awarded 2nd place in the Band & Wind Ensemble Performance category as part of the 2023 American Prize National Nonprofit Competition.

The American Prize holds a series of national competitions each year that are designed to recognize and award the best artists, directors, ensembles, and composers across all levels of performing arts in the United States. Instead of holding a live competition, the American Prize only accepts recorded performances. Submitted recordings are reviewed by a panel of judges, including chief judge David Katz, and finalists, semi-finalists, and winners are notified according to a timetable created for each competition category. Butler also serves as a judge of the Instrumental Performance, Composition, and Conducting category.
