Department of Art students complete mural for Vallourec Star

The YSU Department of Art unveiled its mural for Vallourec Star at the Division Street tunnel in Youngstown, Ohio May 23, 2023. The piece was completed in collaboration with Vallourec, the City of Youngstown, and Youngstown CityScape. The mural, part of the Vallourec Youngstown Beautification Project, showcases Vallourec’s industrial history in the Mahoning Valley.

McDonough Museum of Art announces summer 2023 alumni exhibition

The McDonough Museum of Art has announced the arrival of their summer 2023 exhibition “Flow – 2023 Alumni Exhibition” that will open to the public Saturday, June 3 and run through Friday, July 14. The exhibition will feature 80 pieces of artwork from 69 YSU alumni across the country. Artist and educator William Mullane will jury the exhibition.

Judith Rae Solomon Gallery to welcome artist Nils P. Johnson

Cliffe College of Creative Arts will welcome artist Nils P. Johnson to the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery in Bliss Hall, located on YSU’s campus. Johnson’s exhibit, “Color Up! Paintings by Nils P. Johnson,” will open to the public April 3, 2023 and run through April 20. An artist reception will be held Wednesday, April 12 from 4:30 – 6:30 PM in the gallery.

University Theatre presents "Antigone"  

University Theatre to present production of “Antigone”

YSU University Theatre will conclude its 59th season with “Antigone,” opening for two weekends starting Friday, March 31, 2023 at 7:30 PM in the YSU Ford Theater, located in Bliss Hall on YSU’s campus. “Antigone,” written by Jean Anouilh, is an adaptation of Sophocles’ play of the same title.

YSU Department of Art debuts exhibition by Pittsburgh artist

The YSU Department of Art debuted Pittsburgh artist Carolina Alamilla’s exhibition “Space Swim” February 27, 2023 in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, located in Bliss Hall on the campus of Youngstown State University. The exhibition, centered around Women’s History Month, follows the theme of finding freedom amidst chaos.

Pipino Performing Arts Series continues with jazz singer & pianist Kate Reid 

YSU's Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series continues with international jazz singer and pianist Kate Reid on Friday, March 3, 2023, at 7:30 PM in the YSU Ford Theater in Bliss Hall, located in the Cliffe College of Creative Arts. A northeast Ohio native, Reid will perform songs from “The Great American Songbook” and other audience favorites.

Dana School of Music hosts Wind & Percussion Invitational 

On Thursday, February 23, the Cuyahoga Falls High School Symphonic Band and the North Olmsted Falls High School Wind Symphony will join YSU’s Wind and Percussion Ensembles at the 16th Annual Wind and Percussion Invitational, with a joint concert to follow at 7:30 PM.

YSU University Theatre returns to Spotlight Theater with “The Last Five Years,” opening Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 7:30 PM in Bliss Hall, located on YSU’s campus. Written by Jason Robert Brown, this Drama Desk award-winner has been translated into multiple languages and was named one of TIME Magazine’s ten best shows of 2001.

Art professor wins Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award 

Professor of art Dragana Crnjak has been selected as one of 75 Ohio artists to be awarded the 2023 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award. These awards are given in recognition of artists’ dedication to the advancement of the creative community, and the award helps to support their growth, development, and recognition as Ohio artists.

Beloved music professor passes away

Dana School of Music mourns beloved professor

Dr. Stephen L. Gage, professor emeritus and former YSU director of bands and orchestra, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023. Over the 28 years he spent in Youngstown, Gage also conducted the Youngstown State University Youth Orchestra and the W.D. Packard Concert Band. Gage was deeply loved and respected throughout the Youngstown community and beyond, and his passion for music and dedication to his students and profession made a positive and lasting impression that cannot be understated.
