Non-Major Opportunities

Keep music in your life at YSU

At DSM, we believe that music education can enrich the lives of all students, regardless of their major, background, or career plans.

Our courses are designed for all students and cover a wide range of musical opportunities. You may perform in one of our numerous ensembles, take private lessons, enroll in one of our general education courses, and more. We invite you to make music with us!

Join an ensemble

Programs in the Cliffe College of Creative Arts generate nearly 200 events annually, and you can be among the performers.

DSM is home to nearly two dozen student bands, orchestras, and choral ensembles, giving you the freedom to explore. March in the Marching Pride. Perform in the Wind Ensemble or Chamber Orchestra. Become a member of a Jazz Ensemble or Combo. Or play in a percussion ensemble.

There are several all-campus ensembles that don’t require an audition. Other ensembles require an audition, but you may audition for any Dana ensemble, no matter your major.

Add more music to your life with a music minor

No matter what your major is, you can add a music minor to your degree.

Choose from the Music Minor or the Minor in Interdisciplinary Game Studies, which is a collaboration between the Dana School of Music, the Department of Art, and the Computer Science and Information Systems Department.

Minors provide opportunities to develop knowledge and skills at a basic collegiate level. Evolving economic, demographic, and technological conditions provide increased incentive for creativity and leadership in society. Courses allow for personalization and may be tailored to your interests.

Take private lessons

Maybe you want to continue studying an instrument you’ve played for several years or learn to play a new one. One-on-one instruction can help you meet your performance goals. You can earn credit and take lessons with Dana faculty or graduate students and tailor your studies to suit you. Lessons are available for experienced performers and beginners.

Study with our world-class faculty

As a student at DSM, you’ll study with and learn from our internationally acclaimed faculty. They’re artist-educators who may be heard regularly throughout the United States and abroad as soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral performers. With these activities, our faculty are dedicated to bringing a wealth of current knowledge to their pedagogy.
