Student Experience

Our creative and cultural milieu

As a student in the Dana School of Music, you’ll thrive in a community whose context exists within the diverse fabric of our region, thereby honoring a special focus on dissemination and sensitivity to a wide cultural heritage. Against this backdrop, you’ll be challenged to consider a wide variety of musical styles, genres, and histories.

These expanded horizons will enable you to leverage your own power of creativity. With world-class faculty who are experts in everything from music industry to historical performance practice and recording arts, you’ll be immersed in pushing the boundaries of making music.

Explore your interests + get involved

We know that you have interests that lie beyond what you're practicing, composing, or studying. Becoming involved in music or university student organizations is an ideal way to pursue those interests, interact with community members on and off campus, and find your own unique niche in the Dana School of Music and at YSU.

YSU has more than 200 diverse student organizations that encompass a wide array of interests, including major-based, community service, Greek affiliations, faith-based, and special interests. We encourage you to join a student organization and improve your leadership skills, develop professional contacts, and have a positive impact on your campus and surrounding community.

Take care of your health

University life can get busy, and it can be easy to neglect your mental and physical health. Youngstown State University is committed to the total well-being of its students, so you can be better positioned for academic, personal, and professional success. YSU’s Health and Wellness Resources provide convenient access to get the care you need, whether you’re already sick or hoping to prevent illness.

Your safety is a top priority

YSU’s full-service Police Department protects our campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. An officer is never more than a phone call away.

You can also use the Student Safety Service to get a free escort on and around campus. Hours are Monday – Thursday, 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The service is also available outside of these hours.

Students are central to our community’s arts scene and sustainability

Youngstown and the surrounding areas are the perfect places to discover a community with dynamic arts and cultural organizations. Scenic beauty and rich ethnic heritage further contribute to the vibrancy of the place we call home.

YSU’s Strategic Plan emphasizes that community engagement is a cornerstone of collaboration that collectively contributes to the sustainable prosperity of the region and beyond. The Cliffe College of Creative Arts and the Dana School of Music are key components in our area’s thriving creative and cultural community. There’s always something to do and see.

You’ll find art, culture, and picturesque locales all around Youngstown. YSU and the City of Youngstown host and sponsor a wide array of events and projects all year long, including music concerts and dance company performances; theatrical productions and marionette shows; museum exhibitions and outdoor, large-scale murals; parks and sporting facilities; traditional festivals and international celebrations; and local eateries and national restaurants.
