Dana School of Music scholarships and awards for students
Dana School of Music (DSM) scholarships reward academic and artistic merit and reduce financial need for many students, including undergraduate, graduate, incoming, and continuing.
Our scholarships are competitive and are only available to students who have been admitted to and declared a major in DSM. They supplement other YSU scholarships and awards you receive as well as any additional financial aid.
To be considered for as many YSU, YSU Foundation, and college scholarships as possible, you should also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Every year, we award superb artistry with talent-based scholarships and graduate assistantships! All applicants to DSM are automatically considered for talent-based scholarships via their audition and other application materials, if those are required. Music scholarships are awarded based on your academic achievements as well as musical talent and level of accomplishment as demonstrated in your audition.
- Undergraduate applicants are not required to submit a separate talent-based scholarship application.
- Graduate applicants who wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship must complete a separate application through the YSU Graduate College. These positions cover tuition costs and provide a cash stipend and enable students to gain invaluable experience teaching or performing other duties within their department. You’ll find more information about these and other graduate financial aid programs here.

Dana scholarship policies
YSU Dana School of Music scholarships are talent based, and applicants are automatically considered for these scholarships at the time of audition. The Director of the school, in consultation with individual departments, determines music talent-based financial awards based on institutional need and recommendations from the faculty.
Undergraduate requirements
Recipients of music scholarships must be enrolled full-time at DSM. Full-time enrollment requires a minimum of 12 credit hours, including 2 credit hours of ensemble.
Current recipients of music scholarships who are admitted to a new music degree will be reconsidered for aid in the context of the applicant pool for that year.
All scholarships are subject to adjustment based upon a change in residency status. For example, a non-Ohio resident who becomes an Ohio resident will have his/her award adjusted proportionally to reflect the reduced cost of attendance for Ohio residents.
Students in an undergraduate degree program are eligible to receive music scholarships for a maximum of 8 semesters. Summer sessions are not included in this limit.
To receive DSM scholarships, recipients must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the end of the second semester of study and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA each semester thereafter.
Recipients must make satisfactory degree progress, as determined by the Director of the school. Probation in any semester will lead to discontinuation of music scholarships beginning in the next semester of enrollment.
Graduate requirements
Recipients of music talent-based financial aid must be enrolled full-time at DSM according to the following minimums:
- Students in the Master of Music in Music Performance must enroll in at least 8 credit hours, including ensemble.
- Students approved by the music graduate program to enroll part-time are not eligible for financial aid.
Current recipients of music graduate assistantships who are admitted to a new music degree program will be reconsidered for aid in the context of the applicant pool for that year.
All graduate assistantships are subject to adjustment based upon a change in residency status. For example, a non-Ohio resident who becomes an Ohio resident will have his/her award adjusted proportionally to reflect the reduced cost of attendance for Ohio residents.
Students are eligible to receive music talent-based financial aid for a limited number of semesters. Summer sessions are not included in this limit. All GA appointments are considered as music talent-based financial aid. The graduate financial aid time limits are as follows:
- 4 semesters for a master's degree
- 6 semesters for a combination of two master's degrees or a master's degree with a double major
Time limit extension appeals will be reviewed by the DSM Director. Special consideration is given to students with master's degree programs whose major field requirements warrant an extension, provided the department supports the request and the Director verifies satisfactory degree progress. Awards given as a result of an extension do not count towards assistantship time limits.
To receive DSM assistantships and scholarships, recipients must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the end of the second semester of study, and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA each semester thereafter.
Recipients must make satisfactory degree progress, as determined by the Coordinator of Graduate Studies. Probation in any semester will lead to discontinuation of music assistantships and/or talent-based scholarships beginning in the next semester of enrollment.
