Engagement + outreach
Community engagement is part of Dana School of Music's DNA. We are committed to serving all aspects of our community and ensuring that the Mahoning Valley and surrounding areas are immersed in the highest quality music and arts education, which is also embedded in our curriculum.
Our outreach activities help students build confidence, gain hands-on experience, and develop the mental flexibility to synthesize concepts as they apply knowledge and skills to public performances, clinics, recordings, and more. Northeast Ohio is a more vibrant arts community because of the Dana School of Music.
Ableton Educator's Day
The Dana School of Music is pleased to offer unique workshops and events that support and enhance the skills of all music teachers. In fall 2025, we’re excited to host our biennial Ableton Educator's Day. The inaugural event was tremendously successful, and we’re looking forward to the second workshop.
Athletic Bands high school events
Throughout the academic year, our Athletic Bands host numerous opportunities for high school students to participate in a wide range of our performances and activities. Join us!
Dana Vocal Performance Clinic
The Dana Vocal Performance Clinic is an intensive workshop that explores the world of singing, acting, and performing. The clinic was initiated, and continues to function through the hard work and determination of our advanced students and promotes a friendly atmosphere where students can learn the basics of becoming an effective singing-actor.
High School Honors Band
DSM invites you to participate in a unique side-by-side experience with the YSU Wind Ensemble! High school students will have the opportunity to interact with our talented student musicians and world-class faculty artists, working collaboratively to prepare a concert.
Middle School Honor Band
This honor band opportunity is open to any middle school student in grades 7 or 8, with a director’s nomination. Depending on instrumentation and director consultation, sixth-grade students may be considered.
The String Project
The YSU String Project seeks to train the next generation of young artists and offers free private lessons on violin, viola, cello, and bass to children in the greater Youngstown area. We also provide a number of additional opportunities for young string players.
Wind Band Invitational
The YSU Band Program hosts an annual High School Wind Band Invitational, offering masterclasses and performances for regional ensembles.
YSU Summer Music Camp
Join our world-class faculty to be inspired during a week-long camp filled with outstanding musical experiences!
YSU Youth Orchestra
The Youngstown State University Youth Orchestra is open by audition to all area students, ages 13-18, and presents two concerts annually. Dr. Michael S. Butler, Youth Orchestra Music Director, and Richard Smrek, Assistant Director, are retained by YSU to provide artistic leadership. The Symphonettes, a string-only group primarily designed for middle school-aged students, is conducted by Michelle Prokop.
