Spring season of University Theatre to begin with robot play “It’s a Small World”

YSU’s University Theatre will kick off its spring season with a production of “It’s a Small World (or The Robot Play),” a play that will showcase a fusion of futuristic storytelling and social commentary. The show will be open to the public February 16 – 18 and 23 – 25, 2024.

Jazz at Lincoln Center to join Pipino Performing Arts Series

The next performance in the Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series will occur Friday, February 23, 2024, as the series welcomes Jazz at Lincoln Center for their concert titled “SING AND SWING: Our American Songbook.” A celebration of the “Great American Songbook,” the show will feature trumpeters, vocalists, and composers Bria Skonberg and Benny Benack III.

Judith Rae Solomon Gallery opens Black History Month exhibition

The Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, located on the second floor of YSU’s Bliss Hall, is featuring local artist and DJ Nasir Watson in its annual Black History Month exhibition that will be open to the public Thursday, February 1, 2024, through Thursday, February 22. Watson is best known for his painting and photography work.

Dana faculty selected to present at Ohio Music Education Association Conference

Professor of music Daniel Keown and lecturer of recording arts Bryan Helsel have been selected to present their research at the 2024 Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference that will be held in Columbus February 1 – 3. Sponsored by Technology in Music Education, Keown and Helsel are two of just 17 applicants chosen to present within their fields.

YSU Wind Ensemble selected to perform at prestigious Ohio Music Education Association Conference

The YSU Wind Ensemble, comprised of 57 Dana School of Music students, has been selected to perform at the prestigious 2024 Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Professional Development Conference held in Columbus February 1 – 3. Conducted by director of bands Michael Butler, the ensemble is one of 30 that were selected to perform at the event. The ensemble will perform Friday, February 2, at 3:30 PM in room CC Union Station BR at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Quey Percussion Duo slated as next performance in Pipino Performing Arts Series

The Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series will welcome the Quey Percussion Duo for a masterclass and a performance as part of the series Friday and Saturday, January 19 and 20, 2024 at the YSU Ford Theater in YSU’s Bliss Hall. For nearly 20 years, the duo has performed its unique style worldwide by blending contemporary, cross-cultural, classical, and popular music.

Dana School of Music alumnus speaks at fall commencement

Robert J. “Bob” DiPiero (BFA, ’76), a Dana School of Music alumnus, spoke at YSU’s fall 2023 undergraduate commencement ceremony Sunday, December 17, 2023 in Beeghly Center. One of Nashville’s most prolific songwriters, DiPiero has been recognized in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, among his numerous other awards.

McDonough Museum announces five exhibitions to open spring semester

The McDonough Museum of Art has announced five exhibitions that will open their spring 2024 schedule beginning Friday, January 19 and running through Saturday, March 2. The museum will feature exhibits by artists Roberley Bell, Jonathon Brewer, Lauren Semivan, Posters Without Borders, and new Emerging Artist Morgan Bukovec.

University Theatre students attend Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland

Eight students from YSU University Theatre attended the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland in August 2023 as part of a new study-abroad course created by lecturer Adam Howard and co-led by associate professor Katherine Garlick. The Fringe is the largest arts and theatre festival in the world and is vital for the creation of all varieties of new theatre and performance.

“Scapin”

YSU University Theatre will present its production of “Scapin” in the YSU Ford Theater November 10 – 12 and 17 – 19, 2023. Directed by senior lecturer Todd Dicken, this comedy follows the adventures of the mischievous servant Scapin as he explores themes of deception, forgiveness, and the triumph of wit.
