YSU’s Jazz Studies Area to present Jazz Combos Concert

The YSU Dana School of Music’s Jazz Studies Area will present a Jazz Combos Concert Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 7:30 PM at the YSU Spotlight Theater, located in Bliss Hall. Under the direction of professors of music Kent Engelhardt and Glenn Schaft, the concert will feature two student ensembles performing classic jazz selections.

Dana to host Wind Band Invitational featuring two high school ensembles

YSU’s Dana School of Music will host a Wind Band Invitational featuring the YSU Percussion Ensemble, YSU Wind Ensemble, and two Pennsylvania high school bands Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 7:30 PM at Stambaugh Auditorium. The Brookville Area Senior High School Band and the Norwin High School Wind Ensemble, led by Kyle Grabigel and Tim Daniels, respectively, will join the YSU Percussion and Wind Ensembles to perform a variety of musical selections.

Department of Art Lecture Series to welcome guest artist Will Hutnick

The Department of Art Lecture Series will welcome guest artist Will Hutnick for a lecture Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 5:30 PM at the McDonough Museum of Art. Based in Connecticut, Hutnick currently serves as the director of artistic programming at the Wassaic Project, a nonprofit organization that utilizes art and education to foster positive social change. His exhibit, “QUEER HORIZONS,” is on display at the McDonough through Friday, February 28

YSU Concert Band to welcome high school ensemble for joint performance The YSU Dana School of Music’s Concert Band will welcome the Crestwood High School Symphonic Band for a Concert Band Partnership Concert Monday, February 24, at 7:30 PM at Stambaugh Auditorium. Directed by Angela Adkins, the Crestwood Symphonic Band will perform a variety of musical selections alongside the YSU Concert Band, showcasing the talent of these student musicians.

Sculptor Sidney Mullis to join Department of Art Lecture Series

The Department of Art Lecture Series will welcome sculptor Sidney Mullis to present on her work Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 5:30 PM at the McDonough Museum of Art. Her current exhibit, “Caught Skies and Pillowed Pines,” is based around a make-believe forest in which childhood selves retreat to in adulthood. Her other work has focused on puberty, the intimacy of forgetting, and the performance of gender.

Harlem Quartet to join Cliffe College Performing Arts Series

The 2024-25 Cliffe College Performing Arts Series will continue this spring as it welcomes Harlem Quartet, a New York-based string group, Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 7:00 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Youngstown. Currently quartet-in-residence at the John J. Cali School of Music and the Royal College of Music in London, the group advances diversity in classical music with varied repertoire, including minority composers.

YSU Jazz Ensemble to present concert featuring new music and jazz classics

The Dana School of Music’s Jazz Studies Area will present a concert by the YSU Jazz Ensemble Monday, February 17, 2025, at 7:30 PM at the YSU Ford Theater, located in Bliss Hall. Directed by professor of music Kent J. Engelhardt, the ensemble will perform a variety of jazz classics and new music, including “Better” by Cody Fry, as arranged by Dana graduate student and lead alto saxophonist Andrea Richard.

YSU’s University Theatre will continue its 2024-25 season with the production of “The Playboy of the Western World” in the YSU Spotlight Theater February 14 – 16 and 21 – 23, 2025. Directed by senior lecturer Todd Dicken and set against the rugged backdrop of rural Ireland, this timeless tale follows the charming yet controversial Christy Mahon as he captivates a small village with his tall tales of heroism.

Department of Art to host Portfolio Review Day for aspiring art students

YSU’s Department of Art will host Portfolio Review Day, a chance for high school students, transfer students, and aspiring artists to showcase their portfolios to the department’s faculty, Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM in YSU’s Bliss Hall. In addition to receiving feedback on their work, participants can learn about the Department of Art’s programs, facilities, and scholarship opportunities.

Guest artist Julia Betts to present for Department of Art Lecture Series

The 2024-25 Department of Art Lecture Series will welcome guest artist Julia Betts for its next installment Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 5:30 PM in the McDonough Museum of Art lecture hall (room 3000). Focusing on the intersection of sculpture, performance, and installation, Betts aims for her work to create an effect based on certain assumptions. Her current exhibit, “The Dams are Broken,” will also be on display as part of the McDonough’s “Spring Exhibitions” through Friday, February 28, at the museum.
