YSU’s Department of Art will host the “Northeast Ohio Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition” in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery beginning Wednesday, January 8, through Saturday, January 25.

This exhibit stands as northeast (NE) Ohio’s division of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, a national competition in which 7th to 12th grade students can submit their original or literary pieces for award consideration. The NE Ohio region accepts artwork from students in Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, and Ashtabula counties.

Artwork submitted to the regional competition is first considered for Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention Awards, which will be presented during a ceremony in the Solomon Gallery at 12:00 PM on January 25. Gold Key awards are then automatically considered for national recognition by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, including Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and scholarship awards. The National Awards Ceremony takes place inside Carnegie Hall in New York City later in the year.

The NE Ohio division of this competition is organized by Josh MacMillan, a YSU alumnus and current Hubbard High School art teacher. He graduated from YSU in 2003 with his Bachelor of Science in Education.

Entry to the exhibit and awards ceremony is free and open to the public. The Judith Rae Solomon Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue Deck (M30) for a $5 fee payable in cash only.
