The Youngstown State University Youth Orchestra will present its fall concert at Stambaugh Auditorium Sunday, December 15, at 4:00 PM.
The Youth Orchestra is open to all local area students ages 13-18 by audition only. Dr. Michael S. Butler, Youth Orchestra music director, and Richard Smrek, assistant director, provide artistic leadership for the program, which presents two concerts annually.
The Youth Orchestra is comprised of two groups: the Symphony Orchestra, featuring woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments, and the Symphonette, which is a string-only group primarily designed for middle school-aged students. While mainly intended for high-school aged students, the Symphony Orchestra occasionally admits younger students with the passion and talent to participate.
The Youth Orchestra has earned rave testimonials from both current and former student participants, with many praising the program as a great opportunity to learn new technical skills, gain confidence, and even inspire students to become professional music educators or performers themselves.
