Judith Rae Solomon Gallery to highlight alumnus for Black History Month

The Judith Rae Solomon Gallery will highlight the work of photographer and YSU alumnus James Rogers Jr. (B.A., ’72) in an exhibition beginning Monday, January 31, 2022. The free public exhibit, titled "This, That, and the Other (The Way I See It)," is part of YSU’s Black History Month activities.

Jazz Ensemble to perform at Ohio Music Education Association concert

The YSU Jazz Ensemble will perform as the guest group at the Ohio Music Education Association District 5 Honors Jazz Ensembles concert Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 2:00 PM in the Ford Family Recital Hall of the DeYor Performing Arts Center in downtown Youngstown, Ohio. The ensemble will perform music arranged by YSU alumnus Mike Kamuf (B.M., B.M.E., ’91).

Pianist Melody Quah to open 2022 MUSE Series 

The McDonough Museum of Art will open its 2022 MUSE Series with a free concert by pianist Melody Quah Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 7:30 PM at the museum. Quah has performed extensively on the stages of her native country of Malaysia as well as across Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America.

African American History Month exhibition to open at McDonough Museum of Art

The McDonough Museum of Art will open artist Donald Black Jr.’s exhibition “A Day No One Will Remember” Friday, January 21, 2022 in recognition of African American History Month. The exhibition is comprised of a series of photographs of ordinary days filled with childhood play, imagination, and innocence and centers on black children’s premature loss of adolescence.

McDonough Museum of Art opens 2022 with four new exhibits

Four new exhibitions that explore the COVID-19 pandemic, childhood, identity, and intimacy will open the McDonough Museum of Art’s 2022 spring season beginning Friday, January 21, 2022 at the museum. The exhibits will be open to the public through March 5 and will feature the works of Matthew Kolodziej, Piotr Szyhalski, Donald Black Jr., and Carnegie Mellon University’s M.F.A. class of 2023.

YSU Musical Theatre to present “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” cabaret

YSU’s Musical Theatre program will present a cabaret titled “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” Friday, December 10, 2021 at the B&O Station Banquet Hall in Youngstown. The event will feature 30 popular seasonal songs, including jazz, country, and delta blues favorites.

The Dana Brass Chamber Ensemble held a recital Thursday, December 2, 2021, where they performed Eric Ewazen’s “Frost Fire.” Student performers at the recital included Ryan Bowden, Darren Thompson, Sevérino Paredes, Brandon Hackimer, and Zak Rahal.

YSU Youth Orchestra Concert

YSU Youth Orchestra to perform concert at Stambaugh Auditorium

The YSU Youth Orchestra, comprised of Youngstown-area middle and high school students, will perform their fall concert Monday, December 6, 2021 at 7:00 PM at the Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown. Featured music will include Gioachino Rossini’s “William Tell Overture” and “Jingle Bell Rock.”

Five new exhibits to open at McDonough Museum of Art

The McDonough Museum of Art will present five new exhibits beginning Friday, December 3, 2021, including annual shows that feature the work of graduating YSU Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts students. The exhibits will be open to the public through Saturday, December 18.

Andrews Avenue Mural earns CityScape Beautification Award

The 500-foot-long Andrews Avenue Memory Mural, which was a collaborative project between YSU's Department of Art and Lit Youngstown, earned a Youngstown CityScape Beautification Award for Institutions November 18, 2021. The project, led by professor of art Dragana Crnjak, was funded by a Neighborhood SUCCESS grant from the Raymond J. Wean Foundation and was also supported by Youngstown CityScape and the Andrews Avenue Business Group.
