University Theatre presents Little Shop of Horrors

“Little Shop of Horrors” production opens through University Theatre

YSU’s University Theatre will present their production of the black comedy musical “Little Shop of Horrors” beginning Friday, October 29, 2021 through Sunday, November 7 at the YSU Ford Theater in YSU’s Bliss Hall. The story follows florist shop worker Seymour as he raises a plant that feeds on human flesh and blood.

Joseph Carucci named new director of Dana School of Music

YSU’s Dana School of Music has announced that Joseph Carucci was chosen via a national search to become the new director of the school beginning with the 2021-22 school year. Carucci comes to YSU after serving as the head of Eastern Kentucky University’s School of Music, where he also held a coordinator position in the music industry area.

McDonough Museum to present free screening of Toni Morrison film adaptation 

The McDonough Museum of Art will present a free screening of the film adaptation of Toni Morrison’s novel “The Foreigner’s Home” Thursday, October 21, 2021 in the McDonough Auditorium, located in the museum. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the movie’s filmmakers Rian Brown-Orso and Geoff Pingree.

YSU’s Department of Art will welcome painter Sarah Awad for a free virtual lecture Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at 12:00 PM. Awad’s work depicts female subjects floating in indeterminate landscapes and celebrates the expressiveness of the human form.

The YSU Jazz and Contemporary Ensembles will perform their first concert of the 2021-22 school year Monday, October 18, 2021 at 7:30 PM in the Chestnut Room of YSU’s Kilcawley Center. The Jazz Ensemble will also feature music by award-winning YSU alumnus Bryan Kennard.

The Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series will host a free school-day performance of the Tanglewood Marionettes' production of "Perseus and Medusa" Friday, October 8, 2021 at 10:00 AM at the YSU Ford Theater, located in YSU’s Bliss Hall. The show, appropriate for all ages, tells the story of ancient gods, goddesses, prophecies, and heroes.

Department of Art Lecture Series (DALS) to welcome Craig Clifford and Debbie Kupinsky

The Department of Art Lecture Series (DALS) will welcome artists Craig Clifford and Debbie Kupinsky to campus for a free lecture and two workshops October 5 & 6, 2021 in YSU’s Bliss Hall. Clifford is the head of ceramics at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, and Kupinsky is an associate professor of sculpture at St. Norbert College.

Dana Ensemble to open season with Stravinsky and Walton performances

The Dana Ensemble will open its fall season with performances of pieces by Igor Stravinsky and William Walton Sunday, October 3, 2021 at 3:00 PM in the Ford Family Recital Hall of the DeYor Performing Arts Center in downtown Youngstown. The ensemble will perform Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” and Walton’s “Façade: An Entertainment."

Art students complete mural in future Deibel Park

The future Deibel Park has become the home of the newest mural completed by students in YSU’s Department of Art. The mural, which sits at 60 feet across and 13 feet high and features 24 life-like penguin paintings, was designed and painted by art students Rachel Hritz and Verena Bo Gyeong Son. Professor of art Dragana Crnjak advised the students throughout completion of the mural.

McDonough Museum to celebrate 30th anniversary with virtual event

The McDonough Museum of Art will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its grand opening with a virtual celebration Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 7:00 PM. For 30 years the museum has provided Youngstown with a space that houses artist lectures, holds concerts and exhibitions, and showcases the work of students enrolled in courses through the YSU Department of Art.
