YSU’s Department of Art is welcoming guest artist Jeffrey Sippel to its Red Press Collaborative program starting Monday, March 18 through Friday, March 22.

Sippel is a professor of art and the printmaking coordinator at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a Master of Arts from Arizona State University. He also studied at the Tamarind Institute and is a certified master printer.

Sippel’s imagery is best expressed through floral motifs. Due to the spontaneity of his art, the resulting pieces feature abstract shapes and are dependent on him achieving balance between the concept of illusion and the evocative quality of abstract mark making. Sippel’s favorite surfaces on which to work are paper, mylar, and canvas, and he employs printmaking applications in all of his work.

Sippel’s art has been exhibited at numerous renowned venues, including the Smithsonian Institution, the Lalit Kala Academy, and the Cecille R. Hunt Gallery.

Sippel will hold open studio sessions each day throughout the week from 9:30 – 11:30 AM and 1:00 – 3:30 PM in room 4025 of Bliss Hall. In addition, he will present a reception and artist talk about his work on Monday at 3:30 PM, also in room 4025.

The Red Press Collaborative is a unique program designed to promote fine art printmaking at YSU and within the Mahoning Valley region. For one week only each year, the Department of Art welcomes a guest artist to campus who will work alongside art students to create a limited-edition print available to the public via a donation of $125.

Each print from the limited run will be signed, numbered, and fully documented. All contributions go directly to the funding of various events within the Department of Art’s printmaking program, including its study abroad trips, student excursions to printmaking conferences and exhibitions, equipment, and the annual print collaboration itself.
