Jazz Studies

Join a legendary program of artistry, innovation, and excellence

Welcome to the historic jazz studies area at the Dana School of Music! Youngstown State University's jazz area has featured an extensive and challenging program of study for over 50 years.

The YSU jazz area features an education with a personalized approach. We’re large enough to be competitive but small enough for one-on-one attention.

Our programs offer extensive training in jazz improvisation, arranging, performance, history, and pedagogy. Students engage in both small and large ensemble playing, including jazz combos and ensembles, and develop skills in jazz piano and methods.
