Scholarships
Current students' funding sources
Learn more about scholarships and other funding opportunities that are available to current students through YSU, the YSU Foundation, the Cliffe College of Creative Arts, and the Department of Art. Applications open on October 1 of each year, and the application deadline for scholarships awarded through Cliffe College and the Department of Art is February 7 at 5:00 PM EST.
The Department of Art has a large number of scholarships for current art students. These are in addition to scholarships offered through the university and college.
The deadline to apply for scholarships awarded through the Department of Art is February 7 at 05:00 PM EST annually.
Al Bright Memorial Scholarship
The Al Bright Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student entering their sophomore year, with preference given to a student who has an interest in teaching and can describe a unique approach to the work they create. All eligible art majors are encouraged to apply for this competitive award. Applicants must have completed the FAFSA and must include in their application a letter with an explanation of the type of art that inspires them and their unique approach, along with a digital portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
David Hume Kennerly Scholarship
The David Hume Kennerly Scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in photography or digital media. The student must be of sophomore standing or higher. Applicants must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and include in their application an artist’s statement and a digital portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee. Applicants must complete the FAFSA.
Elaine S. Glasser Memorial Art Education Scholarship
The Elaine S. Glasser Memorial Art Education Scholarship will be awarded to an art education major. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and are required to submit an application, a written statement demonstrating need, and a digital portfolio with an image list of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Florence Simon Beecher Talent Scholarship
The Florence Simon Beecher Talent Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student majoring in art. The student must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and submit an annual portfolio of recent artwork.
George Meshel Scholarship
The George Meshel Scholarship is awarded to a studio art student with a concentration in painting or interdisciplinary studio art. The applicant must have a minimum 2.7 GPA. Applications must include an artist’s statement and a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Howard I. Fisher Memorial Scholarship
The Howard I. Fisher Memorial Scholarship will be awarded through a memorial fund in remembrance of Howard I. Fisher. Applicants must have a minimum 2.8 GPA, complete the FAFSA, and include in their application a letter expressing interest and a digital portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Jessica C. Porcase Memorial Scholarship
The Jessica C. Porcase Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time female graphic design major, with preference given to a student who works part-time and played a sport in high school. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must submit with their application a letter expressing interest and a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Margaret Evans Memorial Scholarship
The Margaret Evans Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an art education major who has successfully completed the Freshman Foundation Portfolio Review. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, complete the FAFSA, and submit with their application a letter expressing interest and a digital portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Robert J. Yalch Endowment Scholarship
The Robert J. Yalch Endowment Scholarship will be awarded to a student who majors in art. Applicants must submit with their application a letter expressing interest and a digital portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Robert J. Yalch Photo Award
The Robert J. Yalch Photo Award will be given to outstanding students majoring in photography. Applicants must be in sophomore standing. Students must submit with their application an artist’s statement, a letter expressing interest, and a digital portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Ron Mistovich Emerging Artist Memorial Scholarship
The Ron Mistovich Emerging Artist Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a current sophomore, junior, or senior art student. Applicants must be full-time students with a minimum overall 3.25 GPA. Applications must include a statement of need, a statement of interest, and a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee. The scholarship is renewable, but the applicant must submit to the application and review process yearly.
Ruth Davies Newman Scholarship
The Ruth Davies Newman Scholarship is to be awarded to a female studio art major in honor of Ruth Davies Newman, a member of the Youngstown College Class of 1943 who had to leave school after her first year due to family financial circumstances. Applicants must be sophomore in class rank (having completed their first year), complete the FAFSA, and carry a minimum 2.5 GPA. Applicants must submit with their application a letter expressing interest and a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Theodore R. Cubbison Scholarship
The Theodore R. Cubbison Scholarship is awarded to current students majoring in painting or printmaking who have successfully completed their freshman year. Applications must include an artist’s statement and a portfolio of 10-12 works, including drawings, to be evaluated by the selection committee.
Applicants will be notified of award decisions by email during the first week of April.
