Student Experience

Our creative and cultural milieu

As a student in the Department of Art, you’ll thrive in a community whose context exists within the diverse fabric of our region, thereby honoring a special focus on dissemination and sensitivity to a wide cultural heritage. Against this backdrop, you’ll be challenged to consider a wide variety of styles, philosophies, and histories.

These expanded visual horizons will enable you to leverage your own power of creativity. With world-class faculty who are experts in everything from antiquity to augmented and virtual reality, you’ll be immersed in pushing the boundaries of making.

"I was happy to assist with tasks related to exhibition preparation, including artwork installation, condition reporting, exhibition design, and artwork packing and unpacking. I was also lucky to interact with the museum's permanent collection by assisting with database records and artwork storage initiatives. The experiences and knowledge I have gained through participating in this internship are invaluable to my future in the visual arts."

- Lindsay DeLullo, senior majoring in Interdisciplinary Studio Arts

Butler Institute of American Art Intern, Summer 2024

Explore your interests + get involved

We know that you have interests that lie beyond what you're making or studying. Becoming involved in art or university student organizations is an ideal way to pursue those interests, interact with community members on and off campus, and find your own unique niche in the Department of Art and at YSU.

YSU has more than 200 diverse student organizations that encompass a wide array of interests, including those centered around academic majors, community service, Greek affiliations, religious faith, and special interests. We encourage you to join a student organization and improve your leadership skills, develop professional contacts, and have a positive impact on your campus and surrounding community.

Students are central to our community’s arts scene and sustainability

Youngstown and its surrounding areas are the perfect places to discover a community with dynamic arts and cultural organizations. Scenic beauty and rich ethnic heritage further contribute to the vibrancy of the place we call home.

YSU’s Strategic Plan emphasizes that community engagement is a cornerstone of collaboration that collectively contributes to the sustainable prosperity of the region and beyond. The Cliffe College of Creative Arts and the Department of Art are key components in our area’s thriving creative and cultural community. There’s always something to see and do.

You’ll find art, culture, and picturesque locales all around you. YSU and the City of Youngstown host and sponsor a wide array of events and projects all year long, including museum exhibitions and outdoor, large-scale murals; music concerts and dance company performances; theatrical productions and marionette shows; parks and sporting facilities; traditional festivals and international celebrations; and local eateries and national restaurants.
