McDonough Museum of Art

McDonough Museum of Art

The John J. McDonough Museum of Art seeks to expand the teaching and research function of the university by generating compelling academic and public programs. The McDonough’s mission reinforces the mission of the Cliffe College of Creative Arts and that of Youngstown State University in placing academic excellence, scholarship, and innovation at the center of our operations.

The museum works with Department of Art faculty and students and visiting artists to develop programs and exhibitions that enhance the department’s contemporary and interdisciplinary teaching mission. We therefore align curation with curriculum to strengthen the educational function of the museum in teaching and training students and to deepen our relationship with our community and region.

A modernist landmark, the McDonough Museum was designed by the award-winning architects Charles Gwathmey and Robert Siegel, who are nationally known for their work. The McDonough stands as a unique architectural feature on the YSU's campus and consists of 21,000 square feet of exhibition, lecture, and office spaces.

History of the McDonough

Dr. John J. McDonough, a local physician and art patron, provided the gift for construction of the McDonough Museum of Art. Dedicated in 1991, the McDonough is the art museum for Youngstown State University and the Valley’s Premier Center for Contemporary Art. Internationally known architects Charles Gwathmey and Robert Siegel Associates, who worked together with the then-local firm Ricciuti, Buchanan and Balog, designed the 21,000 square foot facility. The museum stands as a testament to modernist design in its simplicity and sensitivity to the site.
