Why Art at YSU?

Why art at YSU?

As a student in the Department of Art, we’ll prepare you for a myriad of careers, including as designers, creative directors, academic faculty, animation artists, UX/UI designers, photographers, studio artists, arts administrators, and more. As part of the cultural milieu, you’ll experience a wide variety of styles, philosophies, and histories. You’ll also be exposed to various techniques, processes, and experiences in the development of commitment to your work, our community, and the world around us.

Expanded visual horizons and exposure to various histories will enable you to look both within as well as consider a broader cultural context. You'll graduate with a degree in an area about which you’re passionate, and you’ll have a multitude of skills that will enable you to pursue countless career paths.

Art making and the study of art both require special skills training and perceptual awareness. Participation in these processes are the primary means of education. Students and faculty alike are immersed in the quest for knowledge and creative self-realization, whether it is in the form of computer graphics, sculpture, or the study of art from the past.

Because we focus on you

Our nationally and internationally recognized artist educators will engage you with experiential-based coursework that encourages interdisciplinary exploration toward furthering your conceptual and technical development. You’ll have regular opportunities to exhibit your work in the McDonough Museum of Art, the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, and the Student Project Gallery. You’ll also be encouraged to participate in global learning opportunities available through YSU’s International Programs Office.

Our programs balance creativity with traditional skills and emerging technologies while also focusing on contemporary issues and historical perspectives. We’re committed to National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) accreditation standards for all degree programs and to the broader Cliffe College of Creative Arts mission.

If you haven’t spent time with us, we encourage you to visit Youngstown and tour our state-of-the-art facilities, meet our faculty, staff, and students, take in the exhibitions at our McDonough Museum of Art, and visit our neighbors at The Butler Institute of American Art and the Arms Family Museum.
