Express yourself through photographic imagery
YSU's Photography area is part of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Studio Art, Interdisciplinary Studio Arts degree. Students develop a strong foundation in digital photography while exploring both the technical and creative aspects of the medium. Through hands-on coursework, students learn camera operation, lighting, image editing, and professional digital workflows alongside the history, theory, and contemporary practices of photography.
The Photography area places equal emphasis on technical excellence, creative problem-solving, and conceptual development. Students are encouraged to think critically about the images they create, using photography as a tool for visual communication, storytelling, and artistic expression. With access to professional studio spaces, digital imaging labs, and experienced faculty, students graduate prepared for careers in the creative industries or advanced study in photography and related fields.
Facilities
As a student, you’ll have access to a wide variety of professional equipment, including tripods, medium and large format cameras, studio lighting (such as strobes for on-site photography), LED light panels, portable backdrops, scanners, large format printing, and more.
Exhibition spaces
When the time comes for you to display your work, you’ll have the opportunity to exhibit solo, group, or experimental projects in the McDonough Museum of Art, the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, or our Student Project Gallery.
