The McDonough Museum of Art is celebrating the artwork of historical and contemporary black visual artists in a new virtual exhibit titled “#BlackArtistsMatter.”

All works in the exhibition can currently be found on the McDonough Museum’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages, and will be archived on the McDonough’s website.

Among the featured artists is the late Al Bright, who became the first African-American full-service faculty member at YSU in 1965. Bright was also the founding director of YSU’s Black Studies program and was a three-time recipient of YSU’s Distinguished Professorship Award during his 40-year teaching career.

In addition, the museum is introducing a second virtual exhibit titled “Artists Reaching & Teaching Students,” which will highlight the artwork of Mahoning and Trumbull Country high school art teachers and students. Among the featured artists are teachers and students from Lakeview High School and Canfield High School.

Both new exhibits serve as part of the museum’s commitment to feature the work of artists with underrepresented voices and viewpoints. The museum welcomes any suggestions from members of the community for artists to feature in the future.
