McDonough Museum of Art opens fall 2022 exhibitions

The work of five diverse artists will open the fall 2022 exhibition schedule at Youngstown State University’s McDonough Museum of Art Tuesday, September 6, 2022. The exhibitions, which run through Saturday, October 29, are free and open to the public. An opening reception will be held Friday, September 9 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the museum.
“These artists present a diversity of cultures, genders, ages, and artistic approaches, all with complex and intricate ideas,” museum director Claudia Berlinski said.
Artist Alisa Henriquez is a native of Jamaica and currently serves as a professor of studio art at Michigan State University. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts from Indiana University. Her work has been featured at venues all over the world. Henriquez will lecture on her exhibit “The Constructed Body” Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 5:10 PM in the McDonough Museum of Art lecture hall (room 3000).
Gavin Benjamin, a native of Guyana, South America, was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, NY. His work has been featured in venues such as Slick Paris, Sotheby’s NY, the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, Scope Miami, Palm Beach Modern, and the Los Angeles Art Fair. His exhibit is titled “Heads of State.”
Eva Kwong was born in Hong Kong, China and moved to New York when she was a teenager. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art. Kwong has presented her work through lectures, workshops, and exhibitions across the United States, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, Italy, and Finland. She will lecture on her exhibition “Hybridity” Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at 5:10 PM in the McDonough Museum of Art lecture hall (room 3000). She will also be exhibiting watercolor paintings by her late husband Kirk Mangus, who was an internationally-renowned ceramic artist and sculptor. His exhibit is titled “What I See.”
Scott Goss is a lecturer at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art and a Master of Fine Arts from Kent State University. His work has been exhibited nationally and has been awarded by the Ohio Arts Council, the Harpo Foundation, and Kent State University. His exhibit is titled “Rise and Fall.”
In addition to these exhibits, the McDonough Museum of Art named Orlando Caraballo as the Fall 2022 McDonough Emerging Artist. His exhibition, currently in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery in Bliss Hall on campus, is titled “Capicú,” which is a term for the Puerto Rican game of dominos. Born and raised in Cleveland, Caraballo earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art.
A reception for Carabello will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2022 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery. Carabello will lecture on his exhibit at 5:00 PM.
The McDonough Museum of Art is open 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM Tuesday – Saturday. The Judith Rae Solomon Gallery is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Admission to both galleries is free.
