McDonough to celebrate Black History Month with two events
January 29, 2021
The McDonough Museum of Art will celebrate Black History Month with two events held throughout February.
The museum will first offer free screenings of author Toni Morrison’s film “The Foreigner’s Home” at 12:00 PM each Wednesday throughout the month in the museum’s lecture hall (room 3000). The feature-length documentary explores the vision and work of Morrison, a Nobel Prize laureate, through an exhibition of the same name that she guest curated for the Louvre in 2006. The film was written, produced, and directed by Oberlin College faculty members Rian Brown-Orso and Geoff Pingree, with Academy Award-winner Jonathan Demme serving as executive producer.
Seating for the film screenings will be limited to 24 people each. Social distancing and masks are required. To arrange private screenings for classes or small groups, please contact museum director Claudia Berlinski at 330-941-1371.
The museum will also be offering online exhibitions on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter that have been curated in conjunction with Black History Month. Artists to be featured in the exhibitions include sculptor El Anatsui, installation artist Abigail DeVille, painter Jack Whitten, painter and video artist Ellen Gallagher, and multi-media artist Rashid Johnson. A new artist will be featured each weekday throughout February. Additional artists can be viewed in the BlackLivesMatter-BlackArtistsMatter PowerPoint presentation on the McDonough’s website.
