Guest artist Michael Boyd Roman to present as part of Department of Art Lecture Series
October 17, 2025
The Department of Art Lecture Series is set to welcome guest artist Michael Boyd Roman for a presentation Wednesday, October 22, at 5:30 PM in the McDonough Museum of Art lecture hall (room 3000).
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Roman now lives and works in Northeast Ohio as an assistant professor of design and black visual cultures at Oberlin College & Conservatory. His extensive experience as an art educator also includes teaching K-12, with his work in higher education beginning as the visual arts program director at Morehouse College in 2013.
Roman’s mixed media and charcoal drawings seek to portray the ordinary grace of contemporary Black men by blending elements from hip-hop and urban culture with art history and religious iconography. Using the symbols and iconography of spiritual perfection that have reinforced concepts of white supremacy and hegemony for centuries, Roman empowers his figures to embody and occupy similar positions of prestige, power, and purity.
Roman’s exhibit, “Negus Weighting on a Miracle,” is currently on display in the McDonough Museum of Art through Saturday, October 25. The McDonough is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Entry to Department of Art Lecture Series events is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue Deck (M30) for a $5 fee payable in cash only.
