Our daily lives have become inundated with computers and networks. It is pretty much impossible to think of anything we do that does not incorporate some type of computer or computer program. From driving our cars to how the power grid is being managed is done with computers.

The People Reaching Intuition in Mathematics for Empowerment Program (PRIME) is an after-school program that gives interested high school students from Youngstown City Schools the opportunity to participate in mathematical activities and experiment with mathematical research.

Kristi Yazvac graduated from YSU with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Spanish in May 2015. She also received a Master of Arts in Economics in May 2016.

The math department boasts several student organizations, serving multiple interests in math.

Please join our YSU STEM family in welcoming Dr. Osama (Sam) Aljarrah, new Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering. Dr. Aljarrah earned his PhD in Engineering and Applied Science from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Oluwatumininu (Tumi) Adeeko is a third-year student and a Mechanical Engineering major, originally from Nigeria. Tumi was selected as a Wen H. Ko summer intern to work with the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center at the Cleveland VA Medical Research and Education Foundation from June 2021.

Public perception of mathematics careers is often limited to teaching, at either the high school or college level. While this is a noble career path for mathematics students, there are plenty of other opportunities for mathematics majors in the public and private sector.

Cole Sexton is a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in Chemical Engineering and minoring in both Mathematics and Chemistry. During the summer of 2021, he interned with Lordstown Motors to learn about the automotive industry. Cole worked in the Paint Shop of the plant.

Emily Hoopes-Boyd graduated from YSU with a Bachelor of Science in Education May 2017 and a Master of Science in Mathematics in May 2018. In May 2021, Emily graduated from her PhD program in Mathematics at Kent State University and successfully defended her dissertation in October 2021.

Our alumni spotlight this month reminds us of the importance of having an open mind, and how being open and flexible can lead you to the dream career that you didn’t even know you wanted!

How do you know if a major in forensic science might be for you? For one, you find yourself fascinated by crime and have at least a basic interest in science. And two, you shadow and do an internship to really get hands-on in the field!

This Fall, the STEM Expo returns on Thursday, October 7th from 12-4pm in the Stambaugh Stadium with a new hybrid model, offering in-person and virtual options for meeting with registered employers. Read on for important details!

YSU’s results at the National Concrete Canoe Competition continue to soar as the team placed second among 23 universities at this year’s contest. It is the highest the YSU team has placed since finishing fifth in 2018.

One of the most important skills in life is the ability to communicate. However, not everyone can communicate the same or has the ability to communicate the same. There are plenty of different ways to communicate, and new methods are being created every day.
