Careers in Math: Opportunities Abound!

Public perception of mathematics careers is often limited to teaching, at either the high school or college level. While this is a noble career path for mathematics students, there are plenty of other opportunities for mathematics majors in the public and private sector. Mathematics majors frequently obtain positions in data analytics, actuarial science, consulting, research and development (especially at national laboratories), government agencies (the National Security Agency, FBI, Homeland Security, Social Security, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Social Security Administration, just to name a few!), and at smaller companies looking to hire individuals with strong analytic skills and the ability to effectively communicate technical results.

Our mathematics students have careers at such places as National Security Agency, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Towers Watson, Nationwide Insurance, Cleveland Clinic, Medical Mutual, Grange Insurance, Humana, Goodyear, and Progressive Insurance. Many of our graduates have pursued further education in PhD programs in data analytics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics, economics, and public policy as well as professional programs in physical therapy, medicine, and law. Mathematics complements other majors and is a popular choice for students who wish to develop their analytic abilities and set themselves apart from other applicants for jobs and positions in graduate and professional schools.
