Professor of music Daniel Keown and lecturer of recording arts Bryan Helsel have been selected to present their research at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Professional Development Conference that will be held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus February 1 – 3.

To be selected to present at the conference, individuals are required to submit an application proposal that details the focus and scope of their research. Once the application portal has closed, the proposals are sent to committees in the area that review the research. The committees create prioritized lists of applications, which are then reviewed and either accepted or denied by OMEA’s director of professional development.

Keown and Helsel, whose research presentations will be sponsored by Technology in Music Education, are two of just 17 applicants chosen to present within their fields.

Keown’s presentation is titled “Your DAW Can Do What? Exploring Strategies for Integrating DAWs to Teach Students Music Content.” He will present Thursday, February 1, at 2:00 PM in the HY Marion room of the convention center. Helsel will present his research titled “Create a Recording Class With Little or No Budget” also on Thursday at 5:00 PM in the HY Marion room.

In addition, the YSU Wind Ensemble will be performing at the conference Friday, February 2, at 3:30 PM in room CC Union Station BR. The Dana School of Music will also be hosting an Alumni and Friends Reception on Friday at 6:15 PM at the Hyatt Regency Columbus, located at 350 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. The reception will be in room CC B131-132.

The OMEA is a principal organization in Ohio whose goals include promoting music education in elementary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and universities. The OMEA is one of the largest of the 52 federated state affiliates of The National Association for Music Education. OMEA members are involved at all levels of music education, serving more than 1.7 million public school students in 613 public school districts and 108 colleges and universities in Ohio.

The OMEA is also one of the oldest music education associations in the country, with 9,000 members from across the state and approximately 3,000 members annually who attend the state convention.
