Graduate Vocal Students Win Accolades at National Association of Teachers of Singing Ohio Chapter Audition

Three Dana School of Music graduate students won awards at the fall National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Ohio Chapter Virtual Audition held on November 14, 2020. The students study with, Professor in the Dana School of Music.

Founded in 1944, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Inc. (NATS) is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world with nearly 7,000 members in the United States, Canada, and nearly 30 other international countries. Over 170 high school and college students competed from universities such as Oberlin, Cleveland Institute of Music, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Baldwin Wallace and Ohio State University.

Sierra McCorvey, a second-year graduate student who is pursuing an M.M. Vocal Performance, placed first in the Adult Singer category. McCorvey is from Warren, OH.Sierra’s first place performance may be found here: (need this from Jon)

Winning second place (tied with another performer) in the Upper Musical Theater TBB (tenor, baritone and bass) Voice category is Chase Upchurch of Titusville, PA. Upchurch is a first-year graduate student pursuing an M.M. in Choral Conducting. Marlina Karimi, from West Palm Beach, FL, earned third place in the Advanced Treble Voice category. She is a first-year graduate student pursuing an M.M. in Vocal Performance

“Our students have worked diligently on their coursework while preparing for this audition process. Due to Covid restrictions, their challenges have included working with pre-recorded accompaniment instead of the customary live music. The faculty in the Dana School of Music are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to seeing what their future holds,” said Dr. Yun.
