Quey Percussion Duo slated as next performance in Pipino Performing Arts Series

January 11, 2024

The Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series will welcome the Quey Percussion Duo for a masterclass and a performance as part of the series Friday and Saturday, January 19 and 20, at the YSU Ford Theater in YSU’s Bliss Hall.

For the last twenty years, the Quey (“Kway”) Percussion Duo (QPD) has performed its unique style that blends contemporary, cross-cultural, classical, and popular music to create colorful sound focused on musical multi-tasking. They turn the basic acts of percussion—striking, shaking, and scraping—into exciting, energetic performances.

The duo is comprised of Gene Koshinski and Tim Broscious and has performed in Brazil, Canada, China, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They have also appeared at musical festivals, art galleries, conferences, and professional orchestras and have engaged in over 100 university residencies worldwide.

QPD has created nearly 200 new percussion works and has collaborated with numerous renowned composers, including Pulitzer Prize-recipient John Luther Adams. The duo is signed with the Innova, Naxos, Centaur, and Equilibrium record labels.

QPD holds the only full-time residency by a percussion duo in the U.S. at the University of Delaware, where Koshinski and Broscious co-direct the percussion program, coordinate applied lessons, and present joint studio courses.

All tickets for the January 19 show will be sold as general admission. Adult tickets are $15 and special rate tickets are $10 for non-YSU students, YSU faculty and staff, YSU alumni, senior citizens, and Penguin Club members. YSU students can enter for free with a valid ID. Tickets are available for purchase at the door or can be bought in advance by calling 330-941-3105 or by visiting www.ysu.tix.com.

QPD will also conduct a masterclass for percussion enthusiasts January 20 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM in room 2326 of Bliss Hall. The masterclass is free and open to the public.
