Solomon Gallery to feature exhibit of student paintings

October 15, 2020

Through October 30, the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery is showcasing student paintings in a one-wall exhibition titled “Surface.”

The exhibit was introduced to the gallery, located on the second floor of Bliss Hall, as an effort to continue displaying student work despite the restrictions put into place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are eager to continue to showcase artwork to the community working within restrictions due to COVID-19,” Department of Art chair Joy Christiansen Erb said. “By having a series of one-wall exhibitions, we can utilize the beautiful Judith Rae Solomon Gallery in a new way. This allows patrons to safely view art exhibitions through the glass doors of the gallery.”

The exhibition features a selection of paintings from the project “Surface” that was completed in professor of art Dragana Crnjak’s Introduction to Painting class. In the course, students are introduced to different painting methodologies with two main objectives: to explore a variety of tools and surface qualities in painting, as well as to examine the ways that surface handling affects the subject matter and development of content in painting.

Students whose work is displayed include Emily Stonestreet, McDonald, Ohio; Naihomy Lebron, Youngstown, Ohio; Derrick Brubacher, Boardman, Ohio; Dylan Hawk, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Elijah Duponty, Youngstown, Ohio; Nicholas Helco, McDonald, Ohio; Natalie Walk, Warren, Ohio; Basha Guthrie, Miami, Florida; and Rose Williams, Farrell, Pennsylvania.
