Beecher Art & Technology Lecture Series welcomes Paolo Pedercini
March 23, 2022
Paolo Pedercini, a game developer, artist, and educator, will present a free virtual lecture Monday, March 28 at 1:00 PM. The lecture is part of the Beecher Art & Technology Lecture Series.
Pedercini was born in Italy and migrated to the United States in 2007 to study integrated media arts at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is an associate professor of art at Carnegie Mellon University, where he teaches experimental game design, creative coding, and animation.
Pedercini’s artistic practice deals with the relationship between electronic entertainment and ideology. Working under the project name “molleindustria,” he produces videogames addressing various social issues such as environmental justice, religion, and labor and alienation.
Molleindustria obtained extensive media coverage and critical acclaim while hopping between digital art, academia, game industry, media activism, and internet folk art. In addition to his studio practice, Pedercini advocates for independent and socially conscious game making within and without artistic contexts.
He has given lectures internationally in venues such as the Game Developer Conference, the Digital Games Research Association, Ars Electronica, The Centre Pompidou, and Cabaret Voltaire.
Although Pedercini’s work exists primarily online, it has also been exhibited at festivals, galleries, and museums, including the Sundance Festival, the EMP Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Hammer Museum, Games for Change, Gwangju Design Biennale, Indiecade, FILE Brazil, LABoral, and ZKM.
