Sophomore Rachel Jones and graduate student Lindsay Heavner, who are currently working towards degrees in the Dana School of Music, were awarded prizes at this year’s Ohio National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) auditions.
Professor of music Misook Yun accompanied the students to the auditions, held at Cedarville University. Jones earned third place in the Second Year College/Independent Studio Women category, and Heavner won second place in the Advanced College/Independent Studio Women category.
The Dana School of Music has seen previous success at the NATS auditions. Last year, senior Anna Murcko won first prize in the Third Year College/Independent Studio Women category, and alumna Francesca Molinaro earned second prize in the Advanced College/Independent Studio Women category.
NATS was founded in 1944 and is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world, with over 7,000 members from the United States, Canada, and more than 35 international countries. The Ohio chapter of NATS holds the fall auditions to offer students the opportunity to pursue individual performance goals while also providing them with supportive critiques that encourage the students to improve their vocal skills and artistry.
