YSU’s Dana School of Music will welcome trombonist Richard Stout for a masterclass Friday, April 18, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at YSU’s Bliss Hall.

Stout has been a member of The Cleveland Orchestra’s trombone section since 2000. Previous to this appointment, he was a member of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, serving as principal trombone from 1998 to 2000 and second trombone from 1988 to 1998. Stout has also been the principal trombone for the New Haven Symphony Orchestra.

Stout studied at Rice University before graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Glenn Dodson. His earlier teachers included Allen Barnhill and Harold Blevins.

Stout has been a guest clinician and masterclass teacher at festivals and universities across the United States. He is on faculty at Baldwin Wallace University and Stony Brook University and worked at the Eastern Music Festival for 12 years.

Stout’s solo CD, “Decreasing Radius,” was released through Albany Records with his wife, pianist Christina Dahl. As a composer, he has written music for brass and trombone trios, releasing a song cycle by the Poiesis Quartet with Nancy Maultsby titled “as we are” in 2024.

Entry to this event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue Deck (M30) for a $5 fee payable in cash only.
