Three graduate students from YSU’s Dana School of Music won awards at the 2020 National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Ohio Chapter Virtual Auditions. Participating students included Sierra McCorvey, Chase Upchurch, and Marlina Karimi.

McCorvey, a vocal performance student, placed first in the adult singer category. Upchurch, who is studying choral conducting, tied for second place in the upper musical theatre TBB (tenor, baritone, and bass) voice category. Karimi, who is also studying vocal performance, earned third place in the advanced treble voice category. All three students are mentored by professor of music Misook Yun.

NATS was founded in 1944 and is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world. The group’s Ohio chapter holds its auditions annually to offer students the opportunity to pursue individual performance goals while also providing them with supportive critiques that encourage the students to improve their vocal skills and artistry.
