The YSU Jazz Alumni’s “Spotlight On . . .” program is set to welcome alumnus David D’Angelo for a virtual interview Thursday, April 22 at 7:00 PM.

D’Angelo is a jazz performer, music educator, and Broadway musician. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education in clarinet in 1976 and a Master of Music in woodwinds in 1986, both from YSU. His teachers included Joe Edwards, Louie Paul, and Peter Seminaur.

D’Angelo developed the instrumental music program at the Pace Academy in Atlanta and was an instructor of clarinet and saxophone at Wagner College on Staten Island for seven years. He also spent over 25 years performing as a woodwind doubler on Broadway shows.

In 1999, D’Angelo performed at the International Association for Jazz Education Conference in Anaheim, California as a director of Section 8 Jazz, where he received a national award for outstanding achievement in jazz education. He also participated in the Buddy Rich Reunion Band’s Grammy Award-nominated recording “Burning for Buddy” and was cast onscreen as a jazz saxophonist in the Disney movie “A Cradle Will Rock.”

Currently, D’Angelo serves as the director and a senior lecturer of jazz studies at the University of Georgia, Athens’ Hugh Hodgson School of Music.
