Dana School of Music to present “We Rise Again” fall choral concert

November 1, 2021

YSU’s Dana School of Music will present their fall choral concert titled “We Rise Again,” Monday, November 8 at 7:30 PM at the St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown. The concert is free and open to the public.

Performers at the concert will include the Dana Chorale, directed by associate professor of music Hae-Jong Lee, and Voices of YSU, directed by associate professor of music Daniel Keown. Jack Ciarniello and Kathy Miller will accompany the ensembles.

“It is exciting to present Voices of YSU and the Dana Chorale in our first in-person choral performance since December 2019. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the breadth, depth, and versatility of the Dana School of Music choral music program,” Dana School of Music director Joseph Carucci said.

The Dana Chorale will perform different categories of songs, including those with themes of hope, beauty, and life. The choir will feature music by James Macmillan and Jonathan Dove, Kirby Shaw, Elaine Hagenberg, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. They will conclude their concert with a performance of the concert title’s showpiece “We Rise Again,” which was written by Leon Dubinsky and arranged by Stephen Smith.

Voices of YSU will perform music that explores the theme of togetherness. The repertoire will include music arranged by Mark Brymer and composers Daniel Forrest, Moira Smiley, and Mitchell Owens III. They will also perform the Bulgarian folk song “Svadba.”

The concert will conclude with the combined choruses performing movements from Vivaldi’s “Gloria” in D major.
