Pipino Performing Arts Series to host free marionette show

The Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series will host a free school-day performance of the Tanglewood Marionettes' production of "Perseus and Medusa" Friday, October 8 at 10:00 AM at the YSU Ford Theater, located in YSU’s Bliss Hall.

“We recognize that many school districts will have the day off for NEOEA teacher in-service activities,” Cliffe College of Creative Arts dean Phyllis Paul said. “This production is a perfect way to spend part of that day at an incredible performance learning more about the craftsmanship of puppetry.”

The show, appropriate for all ages, will take the audience to an ancient world of gods, goddesses, prophecies, and heroes, accompanying Perseus through personal trials and glorious quests. The show will last for approximately one hour.

The Tanglewood Marionettes is a nationally touring marionette theater based in New England that features large, hand-crafted marionettes, colorful sets, and integrated lighting and sound. Tanglewood is the recipient of two Union Internationale de la Marionette (International Marionette Union) awards, commonly known as puppetry’s highest honor.

Tickets for the show are free but reservations must be made ahead of time by calling the YSU University Theatre box office at 330-941-3105. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue parking deck for a $5 fee payable in cash only. Masks are required in all YSU buildings, including the YSU Ford Theater.

Tickets are also available for Tanglewood’s production of “The Dragon King” Saturday, October 9 at 11:00 AM at the YSU Ford Theater. The show tells the tale of an intrepid grandmother who journeys to the bottom of the sea in search of the elusive Dragon King and the answers to why he has forsaken the land above.
