Surface

Youngstown State University’s Department of Art announces “Surface,” a one-wall exhibition in Bliss Hall’s Judith Rae Solomon Gallery through October 30. The Judith Rae Solomon Gallery is located on the street level of Bliss Hall and open weekdays from 8:00 AM -5:00 PM. Masks are required in all areas of Bliss Hall.

The exhibit will feature paintings installed on one wall, visible only through the glass doors of the gallery to create a safe viewing area for patrons.

Joy Christiansen Erb, Chair of the Department of Art, said, “We are eager to continue to showcase artwork to the community working within restrictions due to Covid-19. By having a series of one-wall exhibitions, we can utilize the beautiful Judith Rae Solomon Gallery in a new way. This allows patrons to safely view art exhibitions through the glass doors of the gallery.”

The exhibition features a selection of paintings from the project “Surface” in Professor Dragana Crnjak’s Introduction to Painting class. Art students are introduced to different painting methodologies with two main objectives: to explore a variety of tools and surface qualities in painting as well as to examine the ways that surface handling affects the subject matter and development of content in painting.
