A world-class education at a great value

In the Dana School of Music, you’ll earn an exceptional musical education with a tuition that’s among the most affordable in this region and state.

In addition, the university offers outstanding scholarship, assistantship, and financial aid programs, with more than ____ percent of our students receiving some form of financial aid.

You’ll be considered for both merit- and need-based financial aid, including scholarships, assistantships, loans, grants, and work-study opportunities.

Merit-based scholarships and graduate assistantships

Every year, we award superb talent with merit-based scholarships and graduate assistantships!

All applicants to the Dana School of Music are automatically considered for these awards. Undergraduate applicants are not required to submit a separate scholarship application. Graduate applicants who wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship must complete a separate application through the YSU Graduate College.

At the undergraduate level, YSU Freshmen Scholarships for Excellence (meritbased awards) include First Opportunity, Red and White, Deans’, President’s, and Trustees’ Scholarships, and the Martin Luther King Merit Award.

YSU and DSoM award these scholarships based on your academic achievements as well as musical talent and level of accomplishment as demonstrated in your audition and/or interview. You’ll find more information about merit-based scholarships on the YSU Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships website.

Undergraduate students who plan to live on campus and participate in the Marching Pride may apply for the Housing Excellence Scholarship and earn up to $2,000 for two years. Additional information may be found on the Marching Pride webpage.

Graduate merit-based awards include graduate assistantships and fellowships and are highly competitive. These positions cover tuition costs and provide a cash stipend and enable students to gain invaluable experience teaching or performing other duties within their department. You’ll find more information about these and other graduate financial aid program on the YSU Graduate College website.

Scholarship and assistantships decisions are made by mid-March, after all Dana auditionees have received notification regarding admissions decisions. Those receiving scholarships through the Dana School of Music will receive notification by the week of April 1. This allows us to evaluate the entire applicant pool and consider all applicants equally, regardless of when they auditioned or interviewed in the process.

Need-based financial aid

During the past academic year, students at Youngstown State University received 119.5 million total financial aid distribution, and more than half of the students in the Dana School of Music receive need-based federal aid.

Need-based financial aid is processed by the YSU Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. More information is available on their website. Please note that international students aren’t eligible for federally funded need-based aid.

Undergraduate financial aid and scholarships

You have several options to pay for your YSU education, including scholarships, grants, work-study jobs, and loans.

Be sure to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which will determine how much aid you qualify to receive.

Graduate student financial support

Many graduate students in the College receive financial support in the form of Assistantships and Fellowships, scholarships through Cliffe College and College of Graduate Studies, or other awards. All support is contingent on your continuing to make adequate progress toward your degree.

Estimate tuition costs

Several factors affect your tuition and fees. What level of student are you? Are you an Ohio resident or from another state or country? Do you live in university housing? In which academic program are you enrolled?

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships’ tuition estimator considers all of these factors and will estimate your tuition and fees for a given academic term.

The Office of the University Bursar has additional information about billing, policies, and procedures.
