Students Take Advantage of Conferences to Advance Learning and Networking Opportunities
Spring saw a number of students and student groups taking advantage of the numerous professional conference and symposium opportunities to expand their skills, network, and present their research. Here are a few highlights:
Grad Students Presents Work at Inaugural Innovation Day
Kyle Duke (MS student in Chemical Engineering) received Honorable Mention Award in the Student Poster Session at Innovation Day 2023 at Kent State University on Friday, March 24th, 2023. Innovation Day is a forum held to demonstrate the leading-edge innovations in Northeast Ohio’s innovation ecosystems, organized jointly by Northeast Ohio Public Universities and sponsored by industry partners. Kyle's poster is "Development of laser induced graphene electrode using direct laser writing and its biosensing and biomedical applications". Kyle was mentored by Dr. Byong-Wook Park.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate student (Mr. Brendan Kuzior) also presented his research work at the Innovation Day 2023 at the Kent State University. This work, YSUTag, is a custom Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) Sensor Peripheral, designed to wirelessly record multiple sensor data simultaneously. BLE protocol allows the device to maintain a low power consumption, allowing for the device to be placed in remote locations. The YSUTag is capable of presenting data from acceleration, temperature, pressure, humidity, and other electrochemical measurements such as impedance. The custom mobile app built for YSUTag presents the recorded sensor data to the user on their phone. The app provides a user-friendly interface that displays the real-time data in a graphical format. The device can be implemented to detect corrosion of pipelines, allowing users to detect a damage.
Mr. Brendan Kuzior is co-advised by Dr. Vamsi Borra and Dr. Frank Li. This work is done in collaboration with Dr. Pedro Cortes YSU Chemical Engineering program.
This work was supported by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Assured Digital Microelectronics Education and Training Ecosystem (ADMETE), under Grant ADMETE FA8650-20-2-1136.
Pre-Vet Society Students Participate in Symposium
A group of students from the pre-vet society recently attended the APVMA Symposium, hosted by Ross University in Louisville, KY. The two-day conference provided participants the opportunity to network with different veterinary schools. Veterinary professionals facilitated a variety of lectures and hands-on labs to educate the students on techniques and opportunities in the field, tips on the application and interview process for veterinary school and more! The group sends a special thanks to SGA for assisting in funding the amazing opportunity!
Five Attend Ohio Space Grant Consortium Student Research Symposium
Five students and two faculty members attended the Ohio Space Grant Consortium Student Research Symposium at Ohio Space Institute (OAI) on Friday, March 31, 2023. The following is a list of the students who presented their research outcomes at the symposium.
Kyle C. Duke, Youngstown State University, Chemical Engineering
Impedimetric determination of cortisol levels using gold nanoparticles functionalized laser induced graphene electrode for smart wound dressing application
Brandon M. Malahtaris, Youngstown State University, Mechanical Engineering
Effectiveness of Vortex Generators on Airfoil Performance
Kenneth A. Vigorito, Youngstown State University, Civil Engineering
Feasibility study on the use of geopolymers for additive construction
Victoria N. Messuri, Youngstown State University, Chemical Engineering
Electrochemically Regulated Smart Wound Dressing
Kyle A. Preusser, Youngstown State University, Chemical Engineering
Electrochemical Detection of Lead Ions using Novel Biohybrid Nanocomposite of Metal Organic Framework and Cellulose Nanocrystals
YSU Students Attend Data Mine Symposium
Youngstown State University students participating in the YSU Data Mine, with the division of Workforce Education and Innovation and the department of Mathematics and Statistics, attended the Data Mine Corporate Partners Symposium at Purdue University.
The symposium showcased the collaboration between students and Corporate Partners during the 2022-2023 academic year. More than 80 projects were presented during a poster session that included posters from the 11 YSU students in attendance.
YSU Data Mine, in collaboration with the Purdue University Data Mine, creates opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students from all majors to gain exposure to the field of data science. The Data Mine is an interdisciplinary learning community that works alongside corporate industry leaders, faculty and mentors and prepares students to solve today’s toughest challenges while planning for the jobs of tomorrow.
