Message from the Dean: STEM College Reorganization promotes interdisciplinary collaboration

Steelant Wim

It is almost unbelievable that we just finished our first two weeks of the 20-21 academic year. In a blink of an eye, we went from closing the College due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all the way to starting the new academic year.

During the summer we planned as good as possible to prepare the return of our 3000+ students to the classroom. Additionally, we completely reorganized the STEM College. The original 10 departments were restructured into 2 Schools and 3 Departments:

Rayen School of Engineering

School of Computer Science, Information and Engineering Technology

Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences

Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Department of Physics, Astronomy, Geology and Environmental Sciences (PAGES)

The Forensic Science program was moved from the College of Health and Human Services to the College of STEM and together with the programs in Biology and Chemistry was housed in the new Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences.

At the same time, STEM Advising, STEM Outreach and scholarships as well as STEM Careers, Internships and Coops were regrouped as the STEM Professional Services unit, under the leadership of Sherri Hrusovski.

I am convinced that this restructuring made the STEM College more efficient and opened the path to the creation of more interdisciplinary programs and research possibilities.
