MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math competition for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). It is designed to address declining math skills among U.S. students and to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM disciplines. Sponsors of the program target middle school students who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining interest and ability in mathematics. The Mahoning Valley Society of Professional Engineers (MVSPE), along with YSU’s College of STEM, sponsored the local competition for schools in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties. This year major funding was provided by Dominion East, Ohio, Buckeye Civil Design, Lindy Group, ms consultants, Thomas Fok & Associates, and Olsavsky Jaminet Architects, Inc.

On February 9, 2023, MVSPE and YSU hosted 71 students from 11 regional middle schools. The days competitions included Target, Sprint, and Team rounds along with a Countdown Round and Mathbowl. The top teams and students were honored at an awards banquet held on March 11, 2023 at A La Cart Catering. This year’s guest speaker was Dr. Douglas Price, Associate Professor (retired) of Chemical Engineering at YSU. The top two teams and top four individuals traveled to Columbus, Ohio on March 11 for the state competition.

Dr. Rick Deschenes, Assistant Professor of Civil/Environmental Engineering organized the event on behalf of YSU STEM.
