Math Team Competes in Historically-Challenging Putnam Exam

Anish Chougule, Abhinav Giri, Ian Jones, Gyaneshwar Agrahari, and Nishan Adhikari made up the 2021 YSU Putnam Mathematical Competition team. Overall, 2975 students participated from 427 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

The Putnam exam consists of twelve questions each worth 10 points a piece so that scores range from 0 to 120. This year the exam was particularly difficult with 550 participants receiving 0 points, which is about 18% of the total number of participants taking the test. This demonstrates the extremely challenging nature of the exam.

Anish Chougule finished ranked in the top 18% and Abhinav Giri finished in the top 44% of all participants taking the exam. The YSU team finished 147 out of 427 teams in the competition which is one of YSU's highest top team ranks ever.
