Dr. Glenn Schaft – Director of Percussion Studies

Youngstown State University and the Dana School of Music are proud to announce a special concert “New Music for Percussion and Saxophone” on Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the Ford Family Recital Hall at the DeYor Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert will feature the Youngstown premiere of Ziggurat by John Hollenbeck. Mr. Hollenbeck is an internationally respected percussionist and composer and will be in-attendance. Ziggurat was commissioned through collaborative efforts of Dana School of Music student organizations including; Youngstown Percussion Collective, YSU Jazz Society, and Phi Mu Alpha, as well as, the Rabold Family. It is dedicated to the Youngstown Percussion Collective. 

Performers include: Michael Anderson, Dean Anshutz, Cory Doran, Tim Hampton, Brian Sweigart – Percussion

Chris Coles, Sara Kind, Evan Hertrick, Tim Sharek,  – alto saxophone 

These YSU student-musicians performed the world premiere October 5, 2007 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City as part of the “Whitney Live” performing arts series that included a showcase concert of John Hollenbeck’s most recent compositions.

The October 25 concert will also feature the world premiere of Being Time by YSU jazz studies faculty member, Dr. Dave Morgan. Being Time was commissioned by Dr. Glenn Schaft, director of percussion studies at YSU and will feature Dr. Morgan-bass, Dr. Glenn Schaft-drums, and Dr. James Umble-alto saxophone.

The concert will also include saxophone and percussion works by David Maslanka, Pierre Max Dubois, Andy Scott, Christian Granger, and Lukas Ligeti.

In addition, Mr. Hollenbeck will present a free and open to the public clinic on October 25 from 2-4pm. in Bliss Hall room 2222.
