The YSU Marching Pride Drumline performs at home football games, select away games, YSU High School Invitational Band Night, community events, and regional band events. Recent performances include Ohio State University, University of Pittsburgh, Michigan State University, University of Illinois, and Bands of America Regional Championships. Drumline membership is open to any YSU student via auditions at the beginning of the Drumline Camp. During the Drumline Camp, members learn a unified approach to technique and sound production that may be adapted to other musical contexts. Drumline members learn various exercises, music, and pedagogical approaches to rehearsing ensembles and building successful percussion pedagogy programs in high schools and colleges.
Dylan Kollat holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance from Youngstown State University's Dana School of Music. Currently he plays piano and percussion as an accompanist for Ballet Western Reserve and the YSU Department of Theater and Dance, instructs and writes as the Drumline Coordinator for the YSU Marching Pride and Champion High School drumlines, maintains a private teaching studio at Motter's Music in Canfield, Ohio, and plays drumset for regional act JD Eicher and the Goodnights.
Through freelance work in the Northeast Ohio area, Dylan holds symphonic credits with the W.D. Packard Concert Band and with the Youngstown Scoring Stage. He also plays drumset regularly for Warren's First Assembly of God Church. Dylan can be heard playing marimba on the Youngstown Percussion Collective's recording of the commissioned work "Forms of Things Unknown" as well as on JD Eicher and the Goodnight's Nashville studio release "Into Place," who's song "Aaron" has been heard nationally on a winter 2013 television placement for Olive Garden. He is a proud alumnus of the Capital Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from Columbus, Ohio and the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps from Toledo, Ohio.
While a student at the Dana School of Music, Dylan studied percussion with Dr. Glenn Schaft, Dr. Elizabeth Delamater, and Patrick Wagner. Dylan performed with the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Winds, Concert Band, Opera, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band, Dana Brass, Basketball Band, Jazz Ensembles I and II, and the Youngstown Percussion Collective touring ensemble. He has served as section principal in the Wind Ensemble, principal timpanist in the Orchestra, section leader in the Marching Pride, and President of the Youngstown Percussion Collective.

Nick Angelis – Snare Drum Clinic

Nick Angelis has been involved in the drum corps activity since 1979. Throughout 15 seasons he marched with The Satellites from Leicester, MA from 1980-87, The Spartans from N.H. '88 and '89, Boston Crusaders '90-91, Santa Clara Vanguard 1992, The Star of Indiana 1993, Brass Theater 1994, and aged-out of The Blue Knights from Denver, CO in 1995. As a performer, he was crowned The 1992 Drum Corps International Rudimental Snare Drum World Champion, 1993 Drum Corps Midwest Champion, and was a part of the 1993 Star of Indiana World Champion Percussion Section.
Nick has taught and/or written for numerous marching bands and drum corps including: Blue Knights, Boston Crusaders, Crossmen, Spartans of N.H., Troopers (Caption Head/Arranger 2005), Spirit of J.S.U. (Co-Caption Head and Co-Arranger, 2004-05), University of Massachusetts at Amherst, three-time BOA Finalist and AAA National Champion, Kennesaw Mountain H.S. (Percussion Arranger), BOA 2004 Atlanta Regional Finalist Harrison H.S., and BOA 2005 National Semi-Finalist, Bellbrook H.S. In 1994, he performed as a soloist in Star of Indiana's Brass Theater Featuring The Canadian Brass. He was an Original Featured Star performer for The Tony and Emmy award-Winning Show, Blast! from 1999-2003.
He performed in London at The Hammersmith Apollo Theatre, opened in New York City at The Broadway Theater, and was in The 1st National Tour performing in over 40 cities. Nick attended The University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. He is currently the Assistant Band Director for the University of Cincinnati Bearcat Bands under the direction of Dr. Terren Frenz, and the Caption Head and Percussion Arranger for the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from Dubuque, Iowa.

Newyopercussion…is a new contemporary percussion quartet out of Youngstown, OH. Founding members Dean Anshutz, Matt Hayes, Bob Young, and Bryan Teeters are all alumni of the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. They formed this ensemble in order to professionally continue their passion for creating and performing percussion chamber music. Newyopercussion emerges from Northeast Ohio to excite and entertain audiences from all walks of life, with performances that not only include contemporary repertoire, but masterworks from the past, and groundbreaking newly commissioned pieces. In addition to public performances, Newyo strongly believes in supporting arts education in the community and throughout academia by offering residencies, clinics, and master classes at various schools and other institutions of public learning.

Jane Black is an Irish folk band from Youngstown, OH. They began playing together in 2012 when they were hired to play at O’Donald’s Irish Pub on New Year’s Eve. Combining traditional Irish songs with more contemporary instruments, they have expanded their repertoire to include modern folk, country, and Irish punk tunes. They play every St. Patrick’s Day, at bars and restaurants, and house parties and depending on the venue will either play electric or acoustic.

Formed in January 2014, Highland Rose is a band based out of the New Castle, PA and Youngstown, OH areas. Having played their unique, technically proficient style of hard rock music all across western PA and eastern OH, the band has big aspirations and plan on exposing their music to new people and new fans at every high-energy, adrenaline-filled show. The band is preparing to release their debut album, "By Chance, By Fate, Or Something In Between," in 2015 and will be coming to a town near you. This summer the band is opening up for national touring acts such as Puddle of Mudd and Chevelle and will be spending their time playing shows across the area.

Portage hails from Kent, OH. Originally a duo, the group started in 2013 as Justin Cheuvront (guitar and vocals) and Isaac Thomas (bass and vocals) and added Hobie Butcher (drums) in 2014. Since then, the math-rock trio has been performing in cities around Ohio, and plans to tour neighboring states in the near future. In 2013, the group recorded their first EP, "Imaginary Friends" and have recently recorded and released "Pond Music" which can be found at Portgage Band Camp, iTunes, and Spotify. Portage strives to be unique and stand out from the rest with their elaborate musicality and meaningful, relatable lyrics. "This will make you fall in love, it has to..."

Faculty-Staff Glenn Schaft, DMA is Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies. He directs the YSU Percussion Ensemble, teaches private lessons, group lessons, and Percussion Seminar, performs with the Faculty Jazz Group, and is co-founder and faculty advisor of the Youngstown Percussion Collective. Our faculty and staff also include: Elizabeth DeLamater, DMA, Adjunct Instructor; Patrick Wagner & Dylan Kollat, Dance Department Accompanists; Dylan Kollat & John Vitullo, Drumline Instructors, and a Percussion Work-Study Assistant.
Curriculum Our program is renowned for its broad-based and flexible approach that addresses each student’s unique career interests. Students may pursue a total percussion perspective or specializations tracks such as drum set, keyboard percussion, contemporary music, or world percussion. Percussion studio enrollment averages 15-20 majors whose curriculum includes Applied Percussion (private lessons, group lessons, Seminar Class) and the YSU Percussion Ensemble. Frequent guest artists present clinics, master classes, lectures, recitals, and private lessons.
Opportunities Campus-based professional gigs include: Youngstown Percussion Collective Touring Ensemble, Basketball Pep Band, Commencement Band, and accompanists for the Dance Department. Off-campus professional gigs include the Youngstown Scoring Stage (recordings for films), Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, Warren Philharmonic, Packard Band, Youngstown Playhouse, Opera Western Reserve, and myriad jazz and popular groups in Cleveland, Akron, Kent, Youngstown, Warren, and Pittsburgh. Our students are employed as instructors and composer/arrangers for area high school drumlines and private teaching opportunities abound at places such as The Drum Smith, Motter’s Music, and Hubbard Music, among others.
History Founded in 1869, the Dana School of Music is one of the oldest music schools in the United States and is part of a thriving urban research university of about 14,000 students. Dana includes 250 music majors, 29 full-time faculty, and 31 adjuncts. Full-time percussion faculty includes Myron (James) Wisler 1962-1972, Joseph Parlink 1972-1996, and Glenn Schaft 1996-present.

Brandt Payne is Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Youngstown State University. Dr. Payne’s previous academic appointments include Associate Director of Bands at the University of Hawai’i and interim Associate Director of Bands and studio trombone teacher for one year at the University of Wyoming. Payne also taught in the Red Oak Public Schools in Red Oak, Iowa.
At the University of Hawai’i he directed the Warrior Marching Band and the Symphonic Band, and taught courses in conducting, and music education. In 2006, under Payne’s direction, the University of Hawai’i Marching Band was one of five marching bands from across the country selected for presentation at the College Band Director’s National Association National Conference. Also in 2008, for the second time in school history the University of Hawai'i Marching Band performed on the mainland U.S. at the 2008 Sugar Bowl as part of the Bowl Championship Series. At Wyoming, Payne took the Western Thunder Marching Band to the 2004 Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.
A native of Iowa, Dr. Payne holds a Bachelor of Music degree in trombone performance and teacher certification from the University of Iowa and a Master of Music degree in trombone performance from Arizona State University. He recently completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting at Arizona State University.
Active as a guest conductor, adjudicator and clinician, Payne is also the author of several literature and recording reviews that have been published in the International Trombone Association Journal. Dr. Payne’s articles have also appeared in music education journals as well.
