Zildjian Cymbal Testing & Selection Day. Zildjian will host a Cymbal Testing Day that will include over 100 cymbals for percussionists to test, cross match and purchase. Also includes a 30-minute presentation by Keith Aleo, Director of Education and Orchestral Activities at Zildjian. He will discuss the manufacturing process and assist with cymbal selection and sound identification. He will also discuss the legend and history behind the oldest continuous run family company in the United States.

Percussion Marketing Council – Play Drums Program – Free 5 minute drumset and hand drum lessons for beginners. Instruments provided. On-site registration.

Guest Artists
Keith A. Aleo is a member of the percussion faculty at the Boston Conservatory of Music and the Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. He also serves as the Director of Education and Orchestral Activities at the Avedis Zildjian Co. He is a member of the Percussive Arts Society’s Board of Directors and the Board of Overseer’s at the New England Conservatory.
His chamber music and solo accomplishments include the Florida Philharmonic, the Miami Chamber Symphony, the New Percussion Quartet, Ensemble 21 and numerous solo recitals. He has also recorded numerous orchestral works for the Harmonia Mundi, Spectrum, and Word Records. He was a member of the percussion section of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra from 1989-2003, and a member of the percussion faculty at the University of Miami from 1994-2003. He also served as the Director of Percussion Studies at Florida International University from 1999-2003.
Rubén P. Alvarez is a Chicago based Latin percussionist, drum set artist, composer, and educator. His performance and recording credits include blues and rock legends Junior Wells, John Mayall and Dave Mason, r&b artists Anita Baker, the Commodores, latin jazz flautist Dave Valentín, Latin pop star “El Puma”, John Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Patricia Barber, and Ramsey Lewis. He is the leader and musical director of El Trio Tropical, and The Raices Latin Music Ensemble. He currently performs with the Chuchito Valdés Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble, Chicago’s premier Latin jazz ensemble Chévere, and Orbert Davis and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra. His credits also include musical theatre as a first call “sub” for both featured percussion chairs of the Broadway in Chicago s production of “The Lion King”. He is on faculty at Northwestern and Roosevelt universities and Columbia College, and annually presents clinics, master classes, and educational “informances” for over 3.000 students and teachers. He is a featured presenter at. The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Bands of America Band Symposium, and at numerous IAJE regional and international conferences and the Percussive Arts Society International Conventions (PASIC). He serves as a member of the IAJE educational resource team, LP’s educational advisory board, and Vic Firths Educational team. He is also the co-author of Rox Media’s Sheddin’ the Basics™ Latin Jazz/Part One instructional CD-ROM.
Brian Bennett – Front ensemble coordinator – Matrix. Bennett received his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance from Kent State University and a Master of Music in Performance and Literature along with the coveted Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. In addition to freelance work in the areas of musical theater, jazz, and classical music, he has arranged music for marching bands and indoor marching percussion ensembles from six states. As an educator, Brian has been a marching and concert percussion specialist for the Brunswick City Schools (OH) for nine years. He is currently on the faculty of Kent State University Stark Campus and maintains an active private teaching studio.
Michael Burritt is currently Professor and Director of Percussion Studies in the School of Music at Northwestern University. He has developed a program of international distinction. He received his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees, as well as the prestigious Performers Certificate from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. His teachers have included John Beck, Gordon Stout, Paul Yancich and Herbert Flower. Mr. Burritt is one of the World's leading percussion soloists and pedagogues, specializing in the areas of marimba and solo percussion.
Nathan Douds- is currently a freelance percussionist and pianist in the Cleveland and Pittsburgh areas. He received his percussion performance degree from Youngstown State University where he is presently Adjunct Instructor in Percussion and directs a contemporary composition and improvisation ensemble in the jazz department. He began working professionally at the age of fourteen where he played engagements for his teacher. He has performed internationally in many diverse situations from 50's to contemporary pop and R&B music, musical theater, orchestral music, chamber ensembles, electronic music, and many diverse jazz groups playing drums, vibraphone and piano. He has performed with such artists as Joe Lovano, Jim McNeely, the Tommy Dorsey Band, the Diamonds, John Hollenbeck, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Coasters, the Warren Philharmonic, and many others.
Dublin Coffman High School Percussion Ensemble from Dublin, Ohio is an integral part of the Coffman band program. It’s an audition based volunteer group open to all percussionists and meets several hours each week from December to late May. The group is divided into advanced and developmental rehearsal segments. One of the key concepts in the design of the ensemble is the participation of all 21 members on several works during the season. The three concert bands at Coffman are under the direction of Mr. Jeremy Bradstreet, Mrs. Melissa Dover and Mr. Andy Rice. Other ensembles include the marching band, jazz band, orchestra, pep band, brass choir and woodwind ensemble.
Eclipticalis Percussion Trio – was founded at The Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2005 under the guidance of Professor of Percussion, Michael Rosen. Members of the trio, Jared Twenty (Crystal Lake, IL), Matthew Cook (Atlanta, GA), and Jonathan Hepfer (Buffalo, NY), are students of Mr. Rosen in pursuit of their undergraduate degrees in performance. Dedicated to the performance of new music, the three are independently involved in several chamber groups and solo projects that have premiered works by Lewis Nielson, Amelia Kaplan, Tim McCormack, and others. The group is heavily influenced by the work of Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, György Ligeti, and others.
Rob Ferguson has been the director of Matrix Indoor Drumline since its conception 1999. Ferguson also serves on the percussion faculty and is the assistant marching band director at Youngstown State University. In addition to his teaching, he is an active composer, arranger and designer in both the indoor and outdoor marching activities. Ferguson has been a guest soloist and clinician on marimba at many universities and high schools in Ohio, Indiana, Texas and Pennsylvania. He earned both his bachelors and masters degrees in percussion performance from Kent State University. Rob is currently an endorser for Dynasty and ProMark, a design/sales representative for M&I Dancewear, and is serving his third term as a percussion representative to Mid East Performance Association Board of Directors.
Tom Freer- attended the Cleveland Institute of Music where he was accepted as Cloyd Duffs last student before retiring. He continued his timpani and percussion studies there with Mr. Duff’s successor, Cleveland Orchestra timpanist Paul Yancich, and principal percussionist Richard Weiner, until graduating in 1986. While in school, Tom formed a band called Exotic Birds along with now Stabbing Westward drummer Andy Kubiszewski, Pittsburgh Symphony timpanist, Tim Adams and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. This was an original alternative band that toured with Culture Club and opened for many major acts of the time such as The Thompson Twins, Psychedelic Furs, Paul Young, Big Country, Modern English and others. In 1986 Tom resigned from the rock scene and headed to Stockholm Sweden, to become principal percussionist and assistant timpanist of the Norrkoping Symphony Orchestra. After one year there Tom became principal timpanist for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic for two seasons and then principal timpanist of the Alabama Symphony in Birmingham for two seasons. Tom has served as assistant principal timpanist and section percussion for the Cleveland Orchestra for the past twelve years. He is also the director of percussion studies at Cleveland State University.
Michael McIntosh is currently the percussion designer/arranger and music coordinator for the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps. His daily activities include acting as one of two percussion coordinators for the Carmel-Clay school district in Carmel,Indiana. In 2005, the Carmel marching band was named the BOA Grand National Champion and their top wind ensemble performed at the 2005 Midwest Band and Orchestra Convention. Michael is an active clinician and has performed clinics for TMEA, OMEA,DCI, WGI, MEPA, IPA, BOA, Yamaha Sounds of Summer and PASIC. He has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe as a sought after percussion consultant and adjudicator. Michael has percussive works published by Row-Loff Publications, Yamaha Sounds of Summer, Tap Space Publications, Drop 6 Media, The Hal Leonard Corporation, Marching Show Concepts, JKS Music and he is also the percussion designer/arranger for the Yokohama Robbins Japanese Drum andBugle Corps. He is a Yamaha artist/clinician as well as a signature artist with Innovative Percussion. Michael also endorses LP Percussion, EVANS drumheads and Zildjian cymbals.
Jon Merritt - is the assistant band director / percussion coordinator for the Hilliard Darby High School in Hilliard Ohio. During his time in Hilliard he has developed the percussion program into the very successful program that it is today. As a graduate of Ohio University, Jon has studied with Mr. Guy Remonko in Athens Ohio. In 1991-93 Jon marched with the Cadets of Bergen County drum and bugle corps, and was the percussion section leader in 1993.
John Riley - Grammy award winning recording artist, John Riley, is enjoying a stellar career as a jazz drummer, including gigs and recordings with artists such as John Scofield, Mike Stern, Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz and Miles Davis. He currently performs regularly with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Bob Mintzer, Jon Faddis and Joe Lovano. John is on the faculty of Manhattan School of Music and SUNY-Purchase and has written three critically acclaimed books about jazz drumming – “The Art of Bop Drumming,” “Beyond Bop Drumming” and “The Jazz Drummer’s Workshop.” He is also a winner of the 2004 and 2005 Modern Drummer Magazine Readers Poll.
Dr. Glenn Schaft is Associate Professor and has served as Director of Percussion Studies at Youngstown State University since 1996. He directs the Percussion Ensemble, performs with the Faculty Jazz Group, advises the YSU Percussion Federation – a student organization, and is founder of the Youngstown Percussion Collective, and the SMARTS Drum Circle Outreach Program. He is an educational endorser with Zildjian cymbals, ProMark sticks, Remo drumheads, Dynasty percussion, Trick Drums, and Black Swamp Percussion. He has over thirty years of professional performance experience in various orchestras, ballets, operas, musicals, world percussion groups, jazz, rock, Latin, and contemporary music groups.
THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON STEEL DRUM BAND was one of the nation's first steel drum ensembles when it was founded in 1980. Now highly acclaimed and widely recognized because of its many concerts and CDs, the U. A. Steel Drum Band is composed percussion students who gain valuable performing and teaching experience playing ethnic music and Latin accessory instruments. In addition to being a performing ensemble that showcases the cultural heritage of the steel drums, the band and its musicians lead programs with at-risk youngsters and teach world music to youth at the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in the Akron metro area. Enthusiastic audiences for the Steel Band's concerts have grown from about 50 in 1980 to more than 2500 per performance in 2005, making the ensemble a major force in the regions cultural and entertainment vitality. This group has performed for president Bill Clinton at his "Akron Town Meeting," at the inauguration of Ohio Governor Bob Taft, several music conferences throughout the United States, and three International Percussive Arts Society conferences. Recently the band has opened for the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and Jimmy Buffett at Blossom Music Center in Cleveland. Recent guests have included Andy Narell, Liam Teague, Boogsie Sharpe, Ray Holman, Mia Gormandy, Earl Rodney, and David Rudder. Youngstown State University Percussion Ensemble is directed by Dr. Glenn Schaft and is one of the premiere ensembles at the Dana School of Music and performs frequently for diverse audiences. For example, in 1999-2000, we performed for over 9000 people. Annual campus performances include the Butler Institute of American Art, the Kilcawley Center, the Dana School of Music Showcase Concert, and the Dana Convocation. Off-campus performances include the Ohio Music Educators Association Convention, the Percussive Arts Society Ohio Chapter Day of Percussion, and other regional tours. The group’s repertoire includes styles from around the world and small ensembles within the group include the Contemporary Percussion Group, Marimba Ensembles, Drum Circle, and various Latin and World Percussion Groups - including West African, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian styles.
High School Snare, Tenors, and Keyboard Individuals Competition

Registration: Entry is free. Applicant must be enrolled in their high school music program. To reserve a time-slot, accepted first come-first served, email Dr. Glenn Schaft geschaft@ysu.edu to request a reservation. You will receive an email confirmation of your time. If you must cancel, please provide advance notice via email. Day-of cancellations should call 330-518-4812. There may be on-site/day-of slots available pending cancellations.
Music guidelines: All applicants performing published music must provide one original copy for the judges’ perusal. All measures should be numbered. Music will be returned after your performance. Scores are optional for original compositions.
Warm-up rooms: will be available 10 -15 minutes before your performance time. These will include Dynasty marching snare drum, tenors, and marimba. Contestants are welcome to bring your own instrument if desired.
Performance rooms: will include open-to-the-public seating.
Evaluations: each contestant will be given verbal comments following your performance. Written comments will distributed at the Awards Ceremony at 6 p.m.
Logistics: Upon arrival please register for OH-DOP in the Kilcawley Center - Cafaro Lobby and check-in for the competition. You will receive a DOP program – including a facilities map. We will provide secure gear storage rooms, near the warm-up and performance venues. All gear must be removed from the building by 6:30p.m. Staff assistants will be available to guide you to storage rooms, warm-up rooms, and performance venues. If you must load-in a keyboard, a loading dock is available for this purpose and we will assist you after you register.
Awards: will be presented at the 6p.m. Awards Ceremony at the conclusion of OH-DOP. First place awards will be granted for snare, tenors, and keyboard and these will include a prize from Dynasty and an individual award certificate. Second and third place awards certificates will also be granted. In addition, first-place winners will be recognized by an award certificate mailed to their high school music teacher.

Required rudiment – open double stroke roll, slow to fast to slow.
Unaccompanied solo, published or original composition. Three-five minutes.
Each contestant is allotted 10-minutes for set-up, performance and judges comments.

Keyboard Competition – Judges – Brian Bennett & John Merritt
1. Required scales – major scales up to 5 flats and 5 sharps, 2 octaves.
2. Unaccompanied solo, published or original composition. Three-ten minutes.
3. Each contestant is allotted 15-minutes for set-up, performance and judges comments.
4. Performance room will include a Dynasty Marimba. Please bring your own instrument if desired.
